the highway man came riding

I once heard a poem about a higway man who came by moonlight for his love. In the end, the last line goes: "...they shot him down on the highway, down like a dog on the highway, as he lay there with a bunch of lace at his throat." I would really appreciate it if anyone knew the author or title or any other information that could lead me in the right direction of finding it. Thanks!
