Serving a data protection notice on a joint mortgage

from michelle (michelle@easynet.co.uk)
I have recently served a data protection notice on the Halifax in response to a shortfall claim, this was from a joint mortgage with my ex whom I have no contact and do not know of his whereabouts. The Halifax are aware of this as I had previously informed them of the reason (he was very violent and had followed me to my previous address and to my old place of work). They say that they need his signature to send the information to me-is this correct? They say that I am liable for the full amount of the shortfall, then why can't they give me the information that I need to assess their claim? Any help greatly appreciated.
