shortfall inconsistencies

following a demand from solicitors early last year stating they represent our ex building society the cab wrote to our ex building society asking if we owed them a debt and they replied the account was redeemed in 1994 however they have still been pursuing for a shortfall debt from me and i now feel that this letter may be a good defence any advice please
