eversheds offering money?

my partner has received a letter from eversheds regarding their house that was repossed about a year ago. The letter says that they are holding money for my partner, but that they need proof of address and passport to confirm my partners identity. Can they ask for this information in order to find out where we are to make us pay them back, or will they really be holding money for my partner to collect? are there any hidden catches in this?
