1971 and 72 Lemans convertable sport

I own a 71 and 72 Lemans convertable sport. The chassis rails on the 71 are half the thickness of the 72's. Is it possible that my 71' chassis was changed and the chassis was replaced by a hardtop chassis or was the 71 chassis made that way and the 72 made thicker because there was a problem with the convertables chassis before the 72?

Can anyone help me?
