Looking for info resources on film microcontrast

from Jim Snyder (jim.snyder@uaa.alaska.edu)
After recently reading Anchell's book on film and developing, I've gotten curious about how much the gradation and microcontrast characteristics of film can be deliberately controlled and manipulated by changing developers and agitation. I've read the typical material on development and edge effects, but these mostly just describe the phenomena and generally how to get/avoid them. Can anyone suggest some additional books, white papers, etc. dealing with this subject in more depth? Anyone know if Crawley has published anything regarding developers and film? Thanks.
