Response to ilford films

from Pete Andrews (p.l.andrews@bham.ac.uk)
If you have to try out an untested film/dev combination, and have no idea of the development time, try this:

Simply cut off a piece of the film and drop it into a beaker of the developer at the right temperature. In normal room light, time how long it takes to develop to full density; that is usually when the front and back of the film look about the same dark grey. Make a note of this time . Give the clip a quick fix until it's cleared, and check the density by holding it up to the light. Compare it with a fully fogged piece of film from a known film/dev combination, and repeat with any necessary adjustments, to get similar densities.

It's not 100% accurate by any means, but a good starting point, and should give printable negs at least.
