Nike is trying to discredit its critics with misinformation

Last week Nike provided misinformation to the public in its criticism of Garry Trudeau, the creator of the Doonesbury comic strip.

In a letter to the South China Morning Post, Nike stated that its workers earn twice the per capita income of rural Vietnam. Nike, however, left out an important fact: Nike factories are not in rural Vietnam. Four of its factories are located in Dong Nai, just outside of Hochiminh City, and one factory is right in the city. The per capita income of the Hochiminh City area is $925 according to the World Bank. The entry level wage at Nike factories is only $480 per year. more ...

i used to be a consumer of nike products i still got apair of nike shoes and t-shirts. its products' quality are above the rest but i think public should boycott nike. now its ripping of money of consumers who are unaware of the product's cost price. i gurantee anyone with knowledge of nike's cheap products sold expensively would not buy it but what is bought is bought already. another reason for me supporting boycott nike is that i just turned vegetarian bout a month ago and learnt of the horrors of not being a vegetarian and supporting to the torture of sinless creatures of god for its produce! well, its ok to eat meat but please stop injecting or experimenting with animals just to increase their production its painful when i discover what are they going through for their meat, dairy, and hide! well im just one of the minarities im just saying what i have to and my urge told me too but we, me have no power to say beyond this for it would mean digging my own funeral! this is just my point of view and in no intention of offending any soul.

Wow...Hearing all those stories about Nike....There's a lot to say about these guys...Mostly all bad. I have some real deep seeded ideas about their marketing strategies, mostly imbedded in racism.... As an artist though, I read in Euope that Mr. Knight purchased the Nike logo from a student for $35.00 Talk about extortion, rip off, etc..yikes. Is no body else entitled to make a living????

-- Laurence M. Gartel (lgartel@hotmail.com), March 19, 1998.

Nike certainly does suck. Doonesbury is hilarious when they make fun of Nike. Two things are appalling about them: 1. They run sweat shops. 2. They lie about it.

-- Signal 7 (punker31337@yahoo.com), June 22, 1998.

I think most people no that Nike and their Swwoooshtika logo are exploiting workers in Vietnam. I would like to know if anybody knows of any ethical trainers manufacturers, so that people can buy their products instead. I'm sure Nike are no different from any other trainer manufacturers - or maybe there is an ethical shoe company out there - vote with your wallets!

-- Joe (joseph@livingtime.freeserve.co.uk), April 19, 1999.

Workers from all over the world, including millions of children labor under very abusive conditions, and are not given even the most basic human rights that everyone deserves. Even under the most oppressive working conditions in the world, the slave laborers in Sweatshops make little to no money. They become incapable of supporting their families, and themselves. For instance, workers in Vietnam make less than $0.12 an hour, in Honduras the workers average about $0.60 per hour, and in Indonesia workers average $0.15 an hour. Fueled by the desire for profit, corporations travel from country to country looking for the cheapest labor, and brutally oppress countless innocent people, including children. When they are asked, Corporations tell us that they are using sweatshops to "remain competitive". The irony of the situation is in the fact that these Corporations are not facing profit loses or bankruptcy.

I certainly agree with all the comments made but would like to know if any of you have come up with a decent alternative. As you say the quality of the products is high and for those of us wearing trainers professionally, ie as fitness instructors, personal health and safety are vital. PLEASE let me know if you know of any other good makes that are more ethically produced and possibly fairly traded... Or am I just a dreamer?

I Love Nike They R Amazing

-- bob (bob@hotmail.com), February 04, 2002.

I hate Nike so much. I am doing a report on exploiting Nike and after all the stuff I have read, I can only say....what a stupid company. I can't stand how they run sweat shops and lie about it. Why lie? What kind of company is that anyway? I hope that people who like nike, will look at the big picture and realize that the company is just a big scam and they are liers.

-- Thawnee (Skittles_4689@yahoo.com), May 28, 2002.

You guys who think Nike should be boycotted are so one-minded. Do you actually think that nike is the only company making their shoes extremely cheap in sweatshops? Take an average pair of sneakers, Like Adidas for example, and look at the tag. Do you actually think it says "Made In America"? Hell no. Every other major company does it and you all are ignorant.

-- Keshav Charya (charya@comcast.net), May 29, 2002.

If you dislike Nike and other companies similar to Nike, try reading a book called Culture Jam. This book will open your eyes to the unfortunate B.S. that is going on in the world when it comes to big businesses and companies. It will also fill your head with great ideas and give you a great deal of alternatives.

-- (xuedhan@galaxynet.com.au), June 09, 2002.

Nike is a great company that supports many good causes around the world. Laborers are payed a good wage for their work relative to the society in which they live. Nike makes quality products. I will continue to buy and still will millions of others around the world. Go find a giant worth fighting. You people are jokers!

-- ned magnuss (nmagnuss@yahoo.com), June 12, 2002.

nike puts the sweatshops in poor countries because it is the only job the people can get and make some money. they work long and hard at only 10 or 12 cents an hour. but if nike was to be taken away they would have no money. nike can stay over there it just that the sweat shop workers need to be educated and aware of what is wrong. the only problem is that their governemnt that can stop us. most of the workers are too afraid to say anything about wages because of what their gov. might do, leading them to loose their job and have nothing at all. who knows if the situation will ever work out or be won

Hey yall you guys suck!!! all you nike haters keep it up- all ya losers who luv nike and dnot give a about child labour should get a life man! NIKE is sooooo gay you guys so all ya who support nike must be stupider than.. hey there aint nothing dumber than u!!

-- Kari (roxy_chikc@hotmail.com), December 04, 2002.

Just because you want to support child labour, doesn't give you the right to diss other people which you have never met. And The fact that you are saying others cannot afford Nike is wrong. I'm sorry to say that just because some people can't afford it doesn't mean they hate it. And if any one says that I can't, well I'm sorry I CAN!!! And I choose not to support a company that onle pays their child workers one cent an hour. In which their homes are a horrible. Supporting Child Labour just shows what kind of person you are.

-- Jill (sunnygirl72@hotmail.com), December 04, 2002.

i agree with jill. if you support child labour your a fucking falmming homo. remember when you were a little pant pisser? would you have liked to work like a mother fuckin dog just to be able to have a rof over your head, fuck the hoes who agree with child labour.

torulla you are such a gay ass nike fag. why the hell are you saying all that bullshit! NIKE is a child labour supporting company and that is the fact. it has nothing to do with wether or not you can afford nike cos most of us can, but dont want to waste $ on gay ass shoes from a child labour supporting country! And hell if you like nike go celebrate wit your little rich friends but dont come to a boycott nike site you fag!

-- Victoria (victoria45@hotmail.com), December 09, 2002.

yea..its sad that nike doesnt pay its workers, but in my sociology class we learned that even though the situation is bad, somebody has to do it in order for our capitalist society to live. What do u think capitalism is? There are a few people who are on top and many more who suffer..even though it is fucked up thats just how it goes. And also, making a minimal amount of money is better than no money, and nike provides a lot of jobs..think about it? every big corporation is fucked up and does the same shit..open your eyes n look the fuck around..this is life

-- Nessa (ilbabiiqirlil@aol.com), December 10, 2002.

hey hey bruno, SOBER up dude and learn to spell okay? tanks

-- (FR@Guido.correcting you), December 10, 2002.

Yo nessa sure wat u say is true, but it doesnt make it ryte that the workers are abused and mistreated. and i think with all the fucking cash nike rakes in they could afford to pay their workers a bit more wouldnt you say

-- Viki (victoria45@hotmail.com), December 18, 2002.

I guess you fail to understand. with or without nike those children will still be working. maybe not in the nike factory but in a chemical factory which I think is worse. so why bother sooo much about it. if those children dont work and earn that money they will starve to death. so even though I totally disapprove the approvel of child labour its a fact that some children, in someway HAVE to work. I hope i could pull some of you extreme activists' feet down back to the ground from that pinky dream world you live in.

-- caandom (caandom@hotmail.com), December 20, 2002.

I think all you people have a point somewhere. I think that child labour is a really horrible thing but it is true that the kids have nowhere else to work and depend on NIKE for a source of income. NIKE does mistreat its workers and they are underpaid. If anything we should be working to better the working conditions for these people, but not nessesarily boycott NIKE. Well you can if u want to but it would take away the workers income.

-- Nicole (phoenix_tearz@hotmail.com), December 29, 2002.

no okay... by boycotting nike, it shows that the world wont stand for the mistreatment of children and its hard workers! Child labor shouldnt be a question in this world, because it should not exsist!!! think about this, we complain that we dont have a big enough house, good food, a nice car, but there are people in this world that dont even have a car, a house to live in, dont have food or even CLEAN water to drink. No they are forced to drink water FULL of deadly bacterias and eat dirt. There are people out there dying of starvation and here we sit on ours asses complaining we dont make enough money even though some of us make up to 100,000 a year, nike factery workers make up to 400-1000dollars a year. Do you seriously think YOU could live of off that for a WHOLE year, even tho you work 14hours a day 7days a week, and you still dont have enough to feed your familly!!!! No i say BOYCOTT NIKE and show them that people in this world care, that we wont turn the other way and pretend not to see whats really going on!!!!!! do the right thing, stand up for yourself and others who can't!!!!!! thank you, that is all!!

-- sarah (theskyispurple@wouldilie.com), January 14, 2003.

-- sarah (theskyispurple@wouldilie.com), January 14, 2003.

hey. could i ask why is it that boycotting Nike is being promoted on your website and that this boycott is being participated in by people who still buy products by methods as ethically unsound/criminal as Nike (for example Vans or Converse) or shoes which are owned or part owned (DC or Savier) allthough of course the boycotting of products produced at the expense of others is entirely admirable but i urge you not to forget that by aiming at Nike - the largest multi-national with possibley the worst trail of shit behind on the globe does not make it accetable for the money in our wallets to fall into the hands of equally evil bastards. UK side Matt

-- Matt Gam (three_feet_high@hotmail.com), January 14, 2003.

Im so fuckin sick and tired of some idiot poppin up and sayin we dont know shit about how they live. if you really care so much about the children do something more useful like electin a president that wont just start a war to decrease the oil prices and test his newest weaopns on some poor innocent people. fuck. go lissen to ur britney spears albums or go kill your self and leave a note sayin, I noticed more than half the worlds population is actually not livin a pleasant life. -- scot koray (fuzywuzyhats@aol.com), February 05, 2003.

Im neither anti-drug nor anti-goverenment, i aint even anti- violence... why be anti-drug? since healthcare is much improved in many countries we have no survival of the fittest which slows down our evolution. so why not let the weak ones eradicate with drugs. why be anti government? I mean even though i hate politicians and laws etcetra Im still aware that those are the guys who actualy keep the peace. and at last why be anti-violence. cuz you actually cant be anti-violence. think! why does tom try to kill jerry? or why does yosamite try to kill bugs bunny? why dont these people hug or fuck or play games together? see its implanted in our brains from that day we actually started communicatin.

i rote all this so I get some more hate mails from my groupies.

You are all blind, it doesn't matter what a bunch of people think, Nike wil not be stopped at any cause. I am 100% against what Nike does, all those children in the sweat shops working for a very poor amount of money, but think about it where would they work if it wasn't for the Nike factories, I'm not saying it's right what their doing by any means, I think it's sick and mean but no one's opinion matters to them all they do is just lie about every thing and truthfully no one will be able to stop it.

Lo Lo

-- Lo Lo (lo_lo89@msn.com), February 20, 2003.

First of all, let me state that in no way do I support what nike and almost all other corporations do in the US and abroad, however, I don't understand the logic behind boycotting the product. Let's say that the boycott was completely successful, and everyone stopped purchasing nike products. What then? Nike would pull ALL of their factories our of those countries leaving thousands of workers jobless. Why not advcate for change in those factories? Wouldn't those people benefit from improvement in their factories more?

-- Ivy (yodi888@hotmail.com), February 21, 2003.

NIKE IS THE BEST!!!!!! IT ALWAYS WAS THE BEST...ALWAYS IS THE BEST...AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-- Julopy (sundevils12335@aol.com), February 25, 2003.

If any one of you who have been contributing to this debate is from the U.S.A, where do you thnk all the products you enjoy come from? They come from poor contries where workers are exploited. This has nothing to do with Nike, its your government, your policies that are suppressing everyone elso because you want to stay as a superpower. How do you expect things to be the same all over the world when one has to be superior than the other.

-- Che Guevara (Che_Guevara1953@hotmail.com), February 26, 2003.

I have an idea, instead of "exploiting" working in poor contries, lets manufacture the shoes here. Not just Nike, but all products. Then we would spend a great deal more on these products, have less disposable income, and the poor contries would get even less. Yea, that the ticket. That will solve everyones problems.

You are all idiots.

-- John McBride (darats@yahoo.com), February 26, 2003.

It's true that Nike isn't the only company exploiting third world workers, BUT IT IT IS TRUE that THEY ARE THE ONES doing it the most and the worst. The percentage of human rights complaints against Nike far out numbers that of other companies. Also, Nike was the 1st shoe company to really push away from american production to asia. the point of the boycott is not to shut down nike or nike factories. It's just trying to encourage a company who is making MILLIONS IN PROFITS to spread the wealth more fairly. Peace. ww

Ok..I think there's no point arguing with people who glorify nike cuz' they're just being fucking conformists and way too ignorant.. But also nike is not just a sportswear corporation..nike is a fuckin' image, a symbol of coolness..so that's why I guess it's so hard to say fuckin' NO! to child labor, NO! to worker oppression, NO! to shitty capitalist corporations who make that gap between RICH and POOR bigger and bigger every day. And to all those who say why the fuck boycott nike, like we can accomplish anything, I say..well you fuckin' can..every corporation in this capitalist system depend om YOUR money, even the system it self..so it's only up to you how will you vote cuz' one dollar IS one vote!

Or you can just read NO LOGO, meet the facts and decide for yourself..so long and don't forget to SMASH CAPITALISM(that system just don't work (wo)man)!

-- Yespeace (trashmail26@lycos.com), June 08, 2003.

How about bringing Nike back to America so we can have some jobs... America has a capitalist economy, not everyone else in the world. So don't say we live in a capitalist world, whoever the fuck said that. You know what pisses me off the most. Nike just bought Chuck Taylors and all of Converse. Now I can't buy those shoes anymore. And yeah I know they just recently started making them in China but at least they cost $20. Its all cuz all you stupid Nike lovers bought Nike and made Converse bankrupt. Now Chucks will be like $80 just like all of Nikes dumb new retro shoes.

-- stupid (stupid@hotmail.com), July 09, 2003.

I stumbled across this page in my surfing, remember a boycott is a means to an ends, changing harmful labor practices, not a ends upon itself. As well, there are many logical mishaps abounding. The situation is dismal, but simply because this complex problem has no immediate simple answer does not justify the status quo. Once again, the issue here isn't whether nike has the "best" product or a single- minded focus on who's to blame, but rather an attempt to understand the effectiveness of boycotting for a practice that is clearly morally apprehensible.
