Answers

1776. That's the year the Spanish founded a mission and army post (El Presidio) on the shore of San Francisco Bay. However, there was no formal town or pueblo for many years.

During the 1830s a little village known as Yerba Buena (Good Herb) sprang up around the current site of Portsmouth Square. For political reasons the village formally re-named itself "City of San Francisco" in 1846.
