Heart of the Ocean {Why did Rose throw it away?}

Does anyone has any idea why the Old Rose choose to drop the diamond into the ocean instead of handing it to her granddaughter or to Lovett?

Response to Heart of the Ocean

Cal gave the necklace to Rose to symbolize that she was a piece of jewlery used as decoration. The name "Heart of the Ocean" has a coldness in it. It never belonged to anybody and never will.

Response to Heart of the Ocean

In "The Making of Titanic", there's a behind-the-scenes shot of Jim Cameron talking to Kate Winslet about what the diamond means to Rose: It is her fate...it seals her fate to Cal Hockley.

One may read Old Rose throwing the diamond into the ocean many ways; there's even been the suggestion that the last scene in the film is "the journey of the diamond" to the resting place of Titanic.

Response to Heart of the Ocean

I see the diamond as a symbol of her secret. Nobody knew she had it at the time of the sinking and nobody knew she had it 85 years later. Also nobody knew about her story (including her family) until she told it 85 years later. Droppping the diamond was a symbol of Rose releasing her story and now that it was gone she was ready to go on.

Response to Heart of the Ocean

None of these answers satisfy me. It is the one scene in the movie that does not make any sense. Why did she hang on to the necklace for so long? Why didn't she donate it to some museum or sell it and contribute the money to a worthy cause. Did she feel nostalgic about it because Jack drew a picture of her with it on. I just don't get it. Any light anyone can shed on this would really be appreciated. Thanks.

because she belonged to jack , not cal

I've been reading all these fan fiction Titanic stories and one of them makes a good point. Rose held onto the necklace because it was the only "physical" memory she had of Jack, because he drew her wearing it, and seeing as how she didn't get to keep the actual portrait, this was all that was left. Everyone has told me a million times why she threw it in the water but I've never really gotten it either. But there did seem to be a sort of "curse" with the necklace so I console myself by saying she threw it away so as not to jinx anyone else.

Another thought is she knew she was going to be with Jack again that night and didn't need the necklace to hold onto for memories anymore so just gave it back to the ocean.

It was symbolism. She held on to that necklace for 85 years without pawning it. If she did that, it would be as if she was using Cal for money. But she diddn't, she made it on her own. That was the point.

(from the discussion with Gloria Stewart at the Cosmic Fury Cameron retrospective)

Gloria Stewart: "Because the script said so!"

She went on to say that Old Rose threw the diamond back because that act marked the end of that part of her life (fulfilling Jack's promise).

I feel the Old Rose dropped the diamond into the ocean because she probably knew she was dying, and did'nt want the necklace to be exploited by public discovery.

I think she was returning her heart to Jack.-KB I think she wanted Jack to have her "heart."-KD

That question bothered me to . . and then one day it dawned on me. . Here is the real reason she threw the stone away (think about it). . .If you remember, at the beginning of the movie, and anonymous claim was made against insurance for the loss of the diamond (Nathan Hartley, Cal's father). Pursuant to the law, the insurance company subrogated (took the place of) the owners and thus became the legal owners of the diamond because they paid out on it. So, Rose could do nothing with the diamond. Anyone she donated it to or gave it to, or sold it to, would be subject to a claim by the insurance company that they were the rightful owners of the diamond. Rose could not even publicly display the diamond as it would automatically be subject to a claim by the insurance company. Accordingly, the diamond only had meaning to her. The moment the insurance company would have gotten it back it would have been auctioned or sold and she would have been unable to control who possessed it and what they did with it. Discarding it, returning it back to Jack at the bottom of the ocean is the only logical thing she can do with it to make sure it doesn't become commercially exploited or even defaced.

She through the Diamond in the sea because she loved Jack and not cal + she new she didnt need it any more for the memory of having it on when jack drew her because she new she was gonna die + be with jack that night

I want to know what was the whole thing with Old Rose lying in the bed @ the very end of the movie...did she die in her sleep like Jack said? or was it a dream? And what was the whole back to the titanic thing after the camera panned away from Old Rose sleeping face? WHAT DOES THAT ALL MEAN??? It's like 5 years after the titanic movie came out and I still dont understand the ending. :P

I think it was because Rose felt the "heart of the ocean"lay where the Titanic was, The only time she ever returned to the place the Titanic sank was those 85 years later. She wanted the stone to go down with the ship. It was the rightful place.

I never saw "Titanic" and don't plan on it - God, how depressing! They die. Well a lot of them. The thing SANK, right? How depressing. And people rushed to see this movie? To watch these people sink in the Tiantic? My question is - what does this scene have to do with the Britney Spears song, "Oops I Did It Again" in which it is referenced?

I BELIEVE THAT OLD ROSE FELT THAT SHE HAD HELD ON TO THE VERY END LIKE SHE PROMISED AND KNEW SHE GOING TO BE WITH JACK THAT NIGHT SO SHE TREW THE HEART OF THE OCEAN INTO THE OCEAN SO BECAUSE THE ONLY REASON SHE HAD KEPT IT HIDDEN WAS 1. SHE DIDN'T WANT IT TO BE EXPLOITED OR AUCTUIONED OFF BECAUSE IT WAS PRECIOUS TO HER AND #2 BECAUSE THAT WAS THE ONLY PHYSICAL SYMBOLIC PIECE SHE HAD TO REMEMBER HIM BY AND THE SHORT TIME THEY HAD TOGETHER BEFORE HIS DEATH

-- ASHLEY WEBER (DCALWEB@AOL.COM), July 24, 2003.

i think its because she knew that some day she will be with jack again so she dropped for the love she had for jack and she also knew that she will have to die sometime or like jack said she will see her grad children grow up and die old lady warm in her bed

-- angelica padilla (angelicapadilla2000@yahoo.com), August 12, 2003.

she is foolish!

-- xuruxu (xuruxu2002@yahoo.com.cn), December 02, 2003.

She threw away the diamond because it was in the script and in reality she would have fenced it or something. The writers knew they had to have some dramatic mushy open ended ending to get people musing/ thinking over why she did it and it was perfect. It went hand in hand with her rejecting a life of wealth when she gave up marrying money in the movie. So throwing away the diamond just reinforced that she was not about needing money and if anything money would tie you down and limit your freedom which was the overall theme of the movie. See we all come up with our theories.

The one & only heart of the ocean was the most beautiful gift rose had. Possesing it she did get her love but also lost it... no matter how beautiful or worth it is but she lost her most precious gift God gave n that was Jack.... so she never wanted history repeated back again with anyone possessing it knowing what was she paid for.

-- Jil (jilesh@hotmail.com), May 13, 2004.

I think Rose didn't sell the Heart of the Ocean because she didn't want to live off Cal's money. She had made a desicion to go with Jack on the Titanic and she was sticking to her guns. If she had sold Cal's money it would be like selling Jack's spirit to get back to being that "spoilt little brat".

Well, I think that it was up to her and if it were me i would have dropped the dimond into the ocean too. Sure the "heart of the Ocean was a very valuble dimond and still is but it is part of the titanic in some way. To me it seems that the "heart of the Ocean" was a reminder to her past and after she told to her story to her grand duaghter and all the other people i guess she relized hat she needed to let go of her past and live in the present.

Rose throw the heart of the ocean in to the ocean because it was her way of giving it to jack-the love of her life
