Nickname = "Frisco" (shudder). Terrible name. Seems to have started as a sailor's nickname around the turn-of-the century. Others may know more.

Motto = "Oro en paz, fierro en guerra" (Gold in peace, iron in war)

Herb Caen used to call it "Baghdad by the Bay."

Proper names for San Francisco are either:

San Francisco or The City (City is capitalized)

Locals do NOT refer to the City as Frisco. Please use that term cautiously, and be prepared to be chastised.
