What happens if your doctor disappears?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Assuming a worst-case scenario (or even a near-worst case scenario), what will all the people do who depend on regular medication? If you have diabetes or high blood pressure or asthma or any of a myriad of other health problems? Are you just SOL? What is the consensus regarding retention of mfg. ability for drugs-including antibiotics after Y2K? Get yourself a high paying government job so that you will be on a priority list, perhaps?

Best advice I can think of: Talk to your physician now about laying in extra supplies. This is more difficult for people who depend on perihables like insulin, but even there a month or two can be socked away.

The reason you want to talk to your health care provider(s) now is that if they balk, you still have time to cultivate new ones before you need them to write the larger scripts for you.

As for manufacturing capability, as long as power stays up the drug manufacturers should be able to churn out product reasonably reliably. Their main problem will come in tracking expiration dates, manufacture dates, lot numbers, ship dates, etc. Furthermore, the problems in pharmacutical manufacturing are more likely to occur late this year rather than next, as the systems have to be able to track things like lot expiration dates which are generally a year after manufacture.

I've presented my physician with documents downloaded from the web dealing with Y2k. The ones that got him thinking were financial discussions by Ed Yardini and Merrill Lynch (I think). His wealth seemed more tangible to him than his physical well being. I've made it clear to him I am laying aside extra supplies that I will be glad to barter for. Also, our family will be getting a series of shots starting in the fall- Simulating an upcoming trip to Latin America. As for laying up extras- I am preparing to create my own food kitchen providing free meals to neighbors and friends. I have a very simple bread recipe and am laying in 3000 lbs. of whole wheat, 500 lbs. of unbleached flour, plus the other required supplies. I will also make a bean and rice soup to accompany the bread. A portable sheepheader's stove (burns wood) will supply the heat source. A portable generator and cached 55 gallon barrels of treated fuel will power an electric grain grinder. I do have fallback plans beyond these, but this is the first and prefered one. Also I've bought a large quantity of non hybridized seed for distribution. Something new on the market- potassiun iodate- replaces the iodide form. This chemical ameliorates the exposure to radiation (a special concern to the young). A key word search will bring up suppliers. Mr. Clark presents a tried and true, if somewhat frightening method of bringing the typical physician's attention to technology and issues surrounding it. Anyone who has problmes might try it.

A few years ago, a prominant hospital chain installed a highly automated medical records and information system into it's largest hospitals. Information was available at every desk, in every lab and treatment room, and in many patient rooms. The physicians rarely used it. That is, they rarely used it until the chain made the Dow Jones online stock tracking service available to physicians at each terminal. Then, not only did they use the system to track their personal wealth, but they began to use it for it's intended purpose.

Sad, but true.

My advise to anyone who takes drugs to coverup certain health problems is....Become responsible for your own health. If you overdose on nutrition, like raw fruits and vegetables, by 2000 you will be so healthy, you will never need a doctor again! Buy a juicer and drink raw juices several times a day and you will give your body the building blocks to heal itself! The only reason anybody has health problems is because they are under nourished, because they eat only vitamin depleted factory prepared food. Eat God's food and you will get better! 150 years ago people ate many raw foods and diseases of today were unknown then! When you go the the grocery store, head straight for the produce department and you will save 50% on your food bill! You will also save many dollars by firing your doctor! Again, become responsible for your own health! WAKE UP AMERICA!

The Reverent George Malkmus had COLON CANCER. He cured himself with overdosing on nutrition. Follow his advise and you can throw all your medicine down the toilet come 2000! For his very informative story, check out website http://home.unicomp.net/~lschiele/gmtest.htm May the "force" be with you. (Nutrition, that is).

WARNING to anyone who leaves messages on this Forum. Be prepared to receive a lot stupid remarks of negative E-mail from people who haven't got a clue! They are the ones who walk around all day with the blinders on! To bad you just cannot get away from those people! My advise to them is, "If you cannot say something positive, do not say anything at all!"

There are homeopathic remedies for every health problem that exists. What I would recommend is getting some of the basic homeopathic remedies and some of the basic books on homeopathy. These books list what the most common remedies are and what they are used for. If you purchase the pellets vs the tablets you can remake the remedies. If anyone is interested in learning how to do that email me and i will give you the info. If I get a lot of requests I will post it on this board. These are the basic books that I would recommend: Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants by Dana Ullman, M.P.H. and Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines by Stephen Cummings, F.N.P. & Dana Ullman, M.P.H. Both of these books and various others can be ordered from Dana's company, Homeopathic Educational Services 1-800-359-9051. I would strongly recommend getting one of their catalogs.

Blessings, Candice

In response to Paul: I wish that pharmaceutical manufacturing were only dependent on the power staying up. I suspected (and confirmed with a friend who is in the industry), that (a) many medications are synthesized from petroleum feedstocks - if the petroleum industry goes, so do most medications, (b) the synthesis has all the embedded controller problems that any sophisticated manufacturing process has and, (c) yes, they need electric power [usual situation - some backup generators, limited fuel supply].

I suggest stocking up as soon as the expiration dates on your medications allow.

Hi everyone,

I have gotten quite a few requests for this info. so I am posting it to the board. The following is how to remake remedies.

Here it is: Pellets are the little round remedies, these are the ones you need to use. Try to buy them in 2 dram brown bottles. All you need to do is order some blank pellets from Homeopathic Educational Srvcs. You will also need to purchase some grain alcohol, 80 proof. When you have used the remedy down to about a half inch(make sure you don't use any more) then, take a plastic funnel that you have boil and completely dried (you will need the ones that are smaller). Hold the funnel over the bottle and pour the blank pellets on top of the others. Health food stores carry brown bottles that are clean with droppers in them, they are made by Bach. You will need to buy a package of those (4 to a pkg.) I put the grain alcohol in there, it's easier to use. After you have put the pellets (blank) on top of the others put 3 drops of grain alcohol on top. Close the lid and pound it on your hand about 100 times. This will mix it. Make sure when you are making the remedies that there are no strong smells around or on your hands. Make sure that you don't touch the remedies. You can order any remedies you need from Homeopathic Educational Srvs. at (800) 359-9051 their hrs are 9am - 6pm M-F, Pacific Time. The books I would recommend for the beginner would be Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants by Dana Ullman, M.P.H. and Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines by Stephen Cummings, F.N.P. & Dana Ullman, M.P.H. BTW Dana Ullman owns Homeopathic Educ. Srvcs. They are very helpful there. This is the list of remedies to have on hand that Dana recommends, I totally agree. I personally have over 600 remedies on hand. Aconitum 30c & 200c* Allium cepa 30c Anas barbariac 30c Apis mellifica 30c & 200c* Arnica montana 30c & 200c* Arsenicum album 30c & 200c* Belladonna 30c & 200c* Bryonia alba 30c & 200c* Calcarea carbonica 30c & 200c* Calendula 30c & 200c* Cantharis 30c & 200c* Chamomilla 30 c & 200c* Colocynthis 30c & 200c* Euphrasia 30c & 200c* Ferrum phosphorica 30c Gelsemium 30c Hepar sulphuricum 30c & 200c* Hypericum 30c & 200c* Ignatia 30c* Ipecacuahna 30c* Kali bichromicum 30c* Ledum palustre 30c & 200c* Magnesia phosphorica 30c Mercurius 30c Nux vomica 30c & 200c* Phosphorus 30c & 200c* Podophyllum 30c & 200c* Pulsatilla 30c & 200c* Rhus toxicodendron 30c & 200c* Ruta 30c Silicea 30c Staphysagria 30c & 200c* Sulphur 30c Symphytum 30c The above remedies would be considered a pretty comprehensive list. For those of you who are concerned with spending money on other things, I will put an asterik* next to the remedies that I feel are absolutely necessary. The numbers and letters after the remedy names are the potencies. If anyone has any questions I will be happy to answer them Blessings, Candice
