Using University resources?

It would seem to me that one resource for testing would be local Universities. Has anyone contacted a University to see if their engineering departments can determine if embedded chips with no obvious date function will fail? Does anyone have any actual test data on embedded chips, I have heard all the theories but seen no results? Is joining EPRI worth the expense and what do you get for your money?

I would think that the University Engineers would have access to vendor information, such as is found at http://www.ragts.com/Y2K
