hi, im going to mess around with the nt registry, but first i need to backup. i know 95 registry is system.dat and user.dat, but how about NT?

The registry hives and their associated filenames are listed below: HKEY_CURRENT_USER Ntuser.dat HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAM Sam HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security Security HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software Software HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System System, System.alt HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG System, System.alt HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT Default

Note: there is also a Userdiff file that is part of the registry but is not associated with a hive. This file migrates profiles from previous iterations of NT to NT 4.0

All the above files are stored, by default, in the SystemRoot\System32\Config directory except Ntuser.dat, which is stored in the users' profile. Also, notice that there is a System.alt as well
