gotta give a bit to get something?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : SONA Traffic Discussion : One Thread

Thinking about our discussion last week, I was struck by the need for some big-picture thinking. After Jim commented about the volume of traffic past his house, and Steve's suggestion that neighborhoods should have a 15 MPH limit, I tried going 15 mph whenever I went by Jim's house. It was hard! Would I be willing to do it all the time? Maybe. I'd sure be more inclined to look for alternatives. Jim's life would be a bit quieter if everybody went that fast.

So the question of the week--

Do we all need to make a small sacrafice to improve our quality of life (ie the level of traffic/safety/noise)?

Let me suggest that this isn't exactly the right formulation of the question. Try it this way: "Would I be willing to drive no faster than 15 MPH through other people's neighborhoods in order to have no one else drive faster than 15 MPH through my neighborhood?"

A gentle prod: I am thrilled that you (Matt) actually tried driving at 15 MPH. (But try it again on the Milvia slow street. It's easy!) But I wonder if our traffic commission member has yet tried it?
