SQL Server and Workstation NT on the same machine

greenspun.com : LUSENET : SQL Server Database Administration : One Thread

I would appreciate EXPLICIT step by step instructions on how to install and configure both Workstation NT and SQL Server on the same machine.

I have tried numerous configurations but all have failed. The end result is that even though I get a clean install of SQL Server (checking the register) and I can start MSSQLServer and SQLExecutive and I can register a server... SQL Executive is not available and thus I cannot start the newly registered server.

Microsoft does not fully document this procedure (partial documentation in KBArticle ID Q171225 "Unable to connect to Stand-Alone SQL Server") and even though I have received numerous suggestions, I cannot get it to work. I want to use this setup for early developmental work in case you are wondering why someone would want to do a crazy mixed-up thing as this.

Is it possible. Please help me. Thanks, JW

Re: SQL Server and Workstation NT on the same machine

John,

I can not help you at the SQL Server Database Administration forum because you are asking more than I can provide in a free forum (nobody else is answering questions on this forum). To offer EXPLICIT instructions I would have to do this myself along with you while you were doing it on your machine.

Your best bet is to pay Microsoft the $200 or so for a PSS (which stands for Priority Support Service, I think) incident. They may, however, point out that SQL Server on NT Workstation is not supported. Please see the SQL Server requirements at http://www.microsoft.com/products/prodref/152_sys.htm where Microsoft clearly states: Operating System: Microsoft Windows NT Server version 3.51 or later

If they do decide to help though, they will follow it through with you till it all plays together.

Sorry. Sometimes you just have to cough up the dough.

Good luck,

Eric

Eric:

I new my request was unreasonable. Sorry for cluttering up your site with it.

You are doing a really great thing and I appreciate all the help you have given me.

I dont see any problems installing SQL 6.5 on NT workstation. I have precisely this type of a setup at the office. A single lisc. of SQL 6.5 comes bundled with every lisc. of Wonderware, www.wonderware.com. Wonderware is an HMI (Human Machine Interface) type product used for SCADA type applications in industry. Anyway, it seems that your problem is that you did not create a SQL Exec account with admin priveleges before you installed SQL 6.5, this is key.
