How about SoCal - San Diego or Orange County?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Libby had such success re DC area that I am emboldened to inquire about the SoCal area, specifically Orange County or San Diego counties. Anyone out there who's living and preparing in this neck of the woods? Winter in SoCal is not as daunting as it can be elsewhere, but water in SoCal will be a BIG problem.

Not that I'm trying to discourage these kinds of threads but the Cassandra website does have links to local groups all over the country.

Amy - Tried "Cassandra" first, a few weeks ago. The only San Diego group listed is not community-preparedness - it's an informal get-together of Y2K project leads from a few SD area companies; they're "waiting to hear back from the Mayor's office...". The only OC group listed was indeed a community-preparednes group and they responded right away when I inquired, but have received nothing at all in the way of updates since that initial contact. *sigh*

My family and I are preparing for a year, we live in SD County. There are many folks here in this County who are preparing.

I'm in North Orange County. Anyone in S. Cal can email me anytime.

I have grave concerns about Southern Calif. If there is no electricity, how will the water that keeps the area from going back to it's natural desert conditions get there? As I understand it, Water must be pumped over the mountains to get to Southern Calif. Anyone recall the Movie, "Chinatown" with Jack Nicholson? It was the old Mullholland family that brought water to Los Angeles. I hope I am wrong about this because my wife's parents live in San Diego County and I am being pressured to go back there for the millennium. I hope someone in the ng has some valid info on this topic.

Bill - Will keep you posted. Am making inquiries with SDG&E and SoCAl Gas, as well as City of San Diego. Stay tuned.

The problem also in that part of the distribution pipeline is bringing water pressure back in a controlled manner if power (pumps) are lost irregularly.

Water hammer is the "surge" or overpressure as miles of water flow back into an "empty" or partially empty pipeline, or the surge as uncontrolled pressure goes into an improperly vented dead-end pipeline. Either way, losing pressure or regaining pressure, if it is not carefully controlled, the main lines (and some smaller lines) blow open.

If command and control at the system level are not carefully maintained, there could be lots of damage out there to the distribution network than would happen in other areas of the country. This is of course, no statement that it will bust, but is another thing to consider about being in that area.

The NY system from upstate NY to NYC for example, doesn't have those sudden 500 foot - 1000 foot rises and drops from the mountain ranges down to the valeys east of LA out by Palm Springs.

After 30 years I'm still "on vacation" in San Diego. Poor typing skills and incipient tendinitis prevent me from participating more enthusiastically in these online discussions. But I sure would enjoy "talking" to anyone within a local phone call of the San Diego metropolitan area. Drop me a line I'll give you my number.

Maybe we can find out who's around here.

Regarding the previous post about S. Cal utilities and such. I recently visited the S. Cal Gas site...and hey...big surprise there, NO information on Y2K period,....zip. We have a frien who is a supervisor for LA Co. Dept of Water and Power...I need to give him a call for the latest gossip.

Sheet-flapping here at Land's End,...
