Y2K on "60 Minutes" 29 Nov 98

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I received a notice from the Drudge Report (yeah, I know) that indicates Y2K will be a topic on "60 Minutes" this Sunday. Drudge indicates that Y2K problem will be exposed as much worse than media has reported. Also, on 23 Nov 98 CNN/HLN ran a package on Rep Stephen Horn's progress reports on 24 governmental agencies (failing grades: Justice, Energy and Health & Human Services--Medicare). His quote on DOE: "After all, who wants an "F" student managing nuclear materials?" A Reuters story dated 17 Nov 98 reports that Britain's army will be called in to aid police in event of Y2K collapse according the Guardian. Ministry of Defence (sic) spokes man confirmed discussions had begun between police and the army. Well, what about that?

Here's the link, but the "60 Minute" story will be gone as soon as these stories get replaced by others:

The first story is on documents being leaked. Story two is about a book on Monica Lewinsky. The "60 Minute Story" is number three.

As I expected, the y2k piece on 60 minutes last nite was mostly 'fluff'. Although it did 'point' to 'serious disruptions' caused by the millenium bug, it stopped FAR short of saying that we might have power outages, food shortages, etc, etc. And, as most major media coverage seems to do, it ended with a happy-face prediction by a computer expert saying that things won't be so bad.

I was disappointed at the coverage, but not surprised. After all, could a program like 60 Minutes REALLY come out and say "guess what folks, we're all f****d"?
