I know the perfect family!

They live on Pennsylvania Avenue, shouldn't be too hard to find them.

They are taking the Y2K scenario very seriously but are keeping quiet about it so as not to upset or worry their friends and neighbours.

They have built several bunkers and stocked them with lots of food, chefs, guards, gyms, a kennel, a saxophone, a hairdresser, - everything you would need really to sit out comfortably the disintegration of the country.

I shouldn't really say this but the father has his own "secret" secret bunker in a secret passageway off of the main secret bunker. This has been custom-designed to his own spec.

Imagine if you will a free food court at any mall of your choosing - this will give you an idea of the ambience aimed for, there will also be a cigar shop and a fully stocked pharmacy opened at all hours. "Pre- screened", uh, interns, will be housed in this "secret" secret bunker to provide a little r 'n r during those cold winter months post y2k. This will be vitally important to the father in order to keep his, uh... spirits, uh... up.

However, not to be outdone by old stumpy as his wife affectionately calls him, she has outwitted the old bird by having had built her own "secret" secret secret bunker off of her own "secret" secret passageway in the main secret bunker. I can't go into details about what the spec. here will be, but I do know that a throne has been installed and Janet Reno and her closest friends will hang out at this location for a little r 'n r of their own every now and then.

They would let you and your film crew film the set-up but then they would have to kill you. On second thoughts maybe this wouldn't be a good idea after all.

Why not give Cory Hamasaki a try, he lives in the nabe and I hear *his* bunker, especially the food court aspect, puts the other ones to shame:)

As a typical responsible, deep-digging, carefully analytic journalist, I'm sure you won't re-inforce the unfortunate stereotype diagrammed with Orwellian ingenuity by another Yourdon forum poster:

"storing food => survivalist => milita member => terrorist. Terrorist bad!"

I wouldn't have even brought it up, but your use of the word 'bunker' as very first among your desiderata raised a red flag to me.

Thanks, -RC

Its an oxymoron....How can you prepare in the D.C. area? Or is that irony? Dang, I'm confused. Does S.I. Hayakawa still hang around D.C.?

I suggest you read the current Vanity Fair article on Y2K and educate yourself. Next, contact Cory Hamasaki at

Then, contact Paul Milne at fedinfo@halifax.com ( Northern Virginia based). Try to not annoy Paul or he might just insult you.

Paul was from New York but now he's out of there. She wants someone from DC.

I picked up on the "bunker" too R.C.

Please Teresa, give this matter a lot of thought. You're doing a great service to your viewers by just reporting on Y2K at all, but how acurately you report the situation will have direct impact on thier lives. If you portray people who prepared with a "y2k friendly" home as I like to call it, in a strategically located area, as "survalist" in "bunkers" it will prevent many people from taking this very crucial issue of preparation seriously. How much people decide to prepare is up to them, but at least some preparation is clearly needed. Sen Bennett publicly advises to prepare, and so did Koskinen himself. I hope that you will refrain from using words such as "bunkers" and "survivalist" in your report. If you take the time to really research who is preparing, you'll find people from every walks of life, from every religious and political associations and non-associations.

Teresa,

Are you aware of the state unemployment insurance situation? Washington D.C. was selected as the state/territory most likely to have problems with its unemployment insurance in January of *1999*.

State unemployment systems calculate benefits a year into the future.

Ms. Albor,

May I second those recommendations made by R D Herring above. These are exactly the two recommendations I would have made, especially Mr. Hamasaki. You might want to review some of his comments and positions. This is easilly done at http://www.sonnet.co.uk/muse/dcwrp.html

Cory Hamasaki is one of the most knowledgable, experienced and voluble individuals currently addressing the Year 2000 problem. Those of us familiar with his contributions cannot recommend him too highly.
