I don't have direct experience with any of the three you mentioned, but have and use a UMAX S12 (much earlier version of the 1200), and like it just fine...

My experience is with the UMAX 1220U. As the name implies, it is a USB connected scanner. My appraisal is all positive. Good scans, excellent detail. Ease of use and reliability. The included software allows this scanner to function easily as a copier as well.

I just purchased the UMAX 1220P (12/30/98) and it installed with no problems using the installation instructions in the Umax manual on a generic Pentium 200 MMX machine. The supplied documentation is really skimpy (almost nonexistent) so an installation/set-up problem might have been a really bad experience. In our area (Los Angeles, CA) it is available after rebate at approx. $80 US (plus tax). Seems like a great deal for the money. Don't have a color printer yet so can't give full impression. But after three days, it's working, I'm playing with scanned in photos and am happy with my choice. Hope this helps.
