Volume effect of developer ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

Some B&W photographers consider 250 cc developer is not enough to provide good negatives, they double or triple the volume of developer, and claim that higher volume developer makes visible better negatives. Any one has similiar expereince ?

The only instances when using a larger volume of developer cause any effect are when using a lesser volume exceeds the capacity of the developer to develop the area of film being developed. Or iow, there's no such thing as too much, just too little. A couple of examples are Xtol and Rodinal at higher dilutions. But with developers for which the minimal amount is more than sufficient, using more does nothing.
