Mr. Bloom,

Here is a brief update for you. Please pass it along if you want.

City of Eugene on Y2K: The City of Eugene has expanded its efforts to address potential problems that may be caused by the so-called Y2K bug. A management team has been created to develop contingency plans for critical City services that could be affected by the Year 2000 rollover. Members on the team include representatives from Public Works, Police, Fire, Risk Management, the City Attorney's Office, and the Administrative Services Department.

This team will focus on emergency preparedness and planning; intergovernmental and private sector coordination; organizational and community information and support; and legal and risk management. Staff from the City of Eugene are working closely with the City of Springfield, Lane County, EWEB and other organizations to coordinate preparedness plans. Eugene's Y2K Management Team is expected to make its first report back to the City Council in February.

The public outreach component of the team's work plan will debut in the first quarter of 1999. Eugene will work with its intergovernmental partners to provide residents with the information necessary to make reasonable and prudent plans for any inconveniences caused by the Y2K bug.

The Y2K management team is the second staff group convened to address Year 2000 problems. Eugene's Information Services Division began working with each department in the City to correct problems with software, hardware, and embedded chips back in Fall, 1997. By July, 1998, the City had completed its inventory of Y2K objects, identified which ones were not compliant, and had developed action plans for remediating each non-compliant object. The target date for completing remediation plans is July 1, 1999.

Thank you Mr. Lee. I think we all apreciate your efforts. Richard Bloom
