Alladin Kerosene Lamps

I don't know if the following is a sign of panic. After researching the issue on the Net, I concluded that it would be prudent to have an Alladin Kerosene lamp. They have mantles that burn about the same as a 60 watt bulb. The Alladin Lamp Co is still operating but it seems they have been overwhelmed with business, have even sent orders back to sender with the advice that they will accept no new orders until March 1/99. The Canadian distributor has zero stock. This blows me away.

No, it's not a sign of panic, just that the 1% of the population who are seriously preparing has moved up now to 2%.

The industries that supply GIs are TINY. They are almost at the breaking point right now. Anyone who waits even a minute to pull the trigger on preparation is kidding themselves.

Don't freak out, it's counter-productive. Write checks. Prepare.

I ordered several Alladins in mid-Nov to give as Christmas gifts from www.goodpick.com. At the time, one month delivery was expected but it has turned into two months and still no lamps. They just can't get them from the supplier. I suppose I'll get them sometime in the next few months but for those who haven't ordered yet...

I got tired of waiting for my Alladin order... I ordered a multifuel lamp from cabelas. They told me that they don't have them in stock and don't expect them for 4-5 months!

I called the manufacturer (in Germany) They don't have a web site but said their primary distributor in the US does: www.britelyt.com

I checked out the site and ordered a lantern.

Guess What? They DID HAVE THEM IN STOCK and the price was lower than Cabelas!!

I called back to order another one to give as a gift but they are backordered for 1 week now. But the're pretty reliable, so I ordered it.

Now if buying a generator was this easy....

Is there really that much difference between the Aladin lamps and the cheap ($5.00) Wal-Mart variety? I understand that they can burn kerosene or oil.

Rick, there's a big difference. Those ordinary kerosene lamps aren't much more than big candles, the light comes from the flame on wick. In an Aladdin, the flame heats a mantle, which glows by itself, giving off up to equiv 60 watt bulb.

rick, yes, ther's a difference. I own both kinds, and the truth is, the "bought at walmart for five bucks" variety is nothing but a lousy candle. I have two aladdin genies that I wouldnt sell for 500 bucks apiece.

Agree. Our Aladdins are awesome PLUS we have Petromax on order for use primarily in barn.

On our way home yesterday from the inlaw's house where we had spent the past week helping out (father-in-law had a heart attack), we stopped in a small village where we used to live 5 yrs ago. There is an old-fashioned type "general store" there; the kind you hardly see any more. We struck *gold*.

We bought an Aladdin oil lamp with the round wick (incandescent type it's called), for only $70. We fired it up last night and it really does equal a 60 watt light bulb! It's awesome! It lit up the entire living room very nicely (room is about 18 X 20). Holds a quart of fuel.

I am going back next week to get two more. :-) (no...I won't tell you where it is LOL).

So...that was my find for the week.

I don't know if anyone even reads this old thread anymore, but a great thing happened to me recently....as we were going through my grandmother's attic (she passed away recently) we found 3 old Aladdin lamps, minus the glass chimneys. They were Model B's, made between 1933 and 1955. (You can find the model # on the knob that turns the wick up and down--all models after 1969 are #23) Anyway, I have a catalog from Lehman's (the people that supply the Amish and Mennonites and they have all the replacement parts for every Aladdin lamp ever made! My uncle was about to pitch them in the trash when my husband and I rescued them and cleaned them up! What a find! Thanks Mimi!
