Is there public transportation? Buses versus car rental?

TheBus is the public bus service on Oahu. TheBus cost $1 a ride and most routes are on a 1/2 service. It goes all over the island and you can even circle the island for the $1 fare. They tend to be standing room only during rush hour, but the ac is pretty good. There are all the big car rental companies and charge anywhere from about $25/day on up, depending on the size of car and peak or off peak days/season.

If you're staying in Waikiki, avoid getting a car. There's alot of traffice, one-way streets, parking is expensive, and overall it can be hard to navigate. Most of the hotels charge for parking. Oahu is the only island with public transportation, per se, and like the previous reply mentioned, it will take you all over the island. If you want to go for a day drive to the north shore (which I highly recommend) then reserve a car (in advance!) that you can pick-up and drop-off near your hotel. On all other islands you'll need a car (reserve well in advance).
