Heart attack in year 2000 (part 2)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Sorry but could not find original thread in medicin or misc. so that I could continue on it.

I would like to know what to do once the prescribed cardizem or now the dictated dilacor is unavailable. What easily obtained substance will do the same job for myself and other post angioplaste individuals. Their function for the most part is to keep the blood pressure down. There may be an additonal function of these two prescriptions.

Other than cutting out coffee, which I can do, what precautions, over the counter drugs, physical and/or mental conditioning or any other means, can one use to insure relatively good health, without those exact prescriptions.

BTW; besides the recommended excersise, garlic and asperin. Niacin is the major medicin of prevention. I have read (Scientific American) that the main reason one builds up plack in the vessels is a mutated protein in the blood that is hereditary. Back in the days of our forefather monkeys, there seems to have been a split where now you either have a predisposition to this problem or your don't. It is not necessarily a matter of how much cholestoral you eat. The body itself manufacturers much more than you can possibly eat.

Lippoprotein-A is the mutated bugger that causes the buildup. Niacin is the only over the counter drug that combats it. Since the article was published in 92 I think there have been other drugs developed which do what Niacin does but not necessarily better. I started Niacin at that time and my doctor approves and has not switched me to any replacement prescription drugs.

Niacin gives a newbie a very unpleasant burning sensation for a few minutes immediately after taking the pill. There are slow release pills that reduce this impact a little and the reaction will stop as the body becomes used to the drug. I am taking 1500 units a day, the maximum recommended but one should build up to that strength slowly.

The article was from 7 years ago. I may have spellings or other minor items incorrect but the premise of using Niacin to combat cholestoral is correct. Anyone with more expertise, please expand on this and also the alternatives to cardizem and dilacor.

Thanks.

Talk to an herbalist and/or naturopath. There is time to find out what you need, and learn how to cultivate it.

Don't forget the coated aspirin (Ecotrin or generic) one per day. A number of researchers have found that vitually any of the beta blockers and aspirn are as effective as the newer drugs. The calcium channel blockers may not be as effective post MI as once thought. In fact, one study showed a higher mortality rate. Diet, exercise and meditation also play a role. Good luck.

Phewh! What a hell of a month that was...

Thanks for the responses here and direct on keeping the blood pressure down. E, I will find and talk to them. RD I do take uncoated asprin but usually with food. Also with meals I include antioxidents and something my son just suggested a couple of months ago; St. Johns Wort. Seems to work well (with me) as a calming agent. I read somewhere that its a (beginners, cheap, non prescription, something?) substitute for prozac.

I'm also looking into the combinations of amino acids that everyone needs and those specific to heart cases as suggested by email.
