Replacement battery for Minox 35mm cameras

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Minox Photography : One Thread

PX27 5.6V battery is still available in Canada and Europe but not in USA. The proper replacement battery for Minox 35mm is a conversion kit with a new battery cover and two lithium CR 1/3 batteries. New GT-E/GT-X/GT-S is shipped with two CR 1/3 batterys. You cannot simply put two CR 1/3 N batteries into your Minox 35; you need to buy a new cover from Minox dealer, otherwise the batteries will not fit. The old cover fits only PX27. Keep the old cover for use with PX27. In Canada, you may buy PX27 or replacememt lithium kit FROM Eight Elm Photo In USA, you may check with MPL

When install the battery pack ( holder + two 3V lithium CR1/3N batteries ) use only a dime to tighten the screw of the holder, a quarter or nickel may scratch the lens barrel. Even a penny is a bit tight.

As I live in Germany I am still able to buy the Varta PX27 5.6V Mercury battery. They are quite expensive though, even here. If anybody's interested in buying some (even larger quantities), please drop me a line. The cost/battery is about $US plus shipping.

Uwe, the price of PX27 also jumped in Toronto. It was about $6 to $9 a piece a year ago, but recently it soars to over $15 apiece.

PX27 may be on the way out, as EU is said to ban mercury battery altogether. I stock up a few of PX27s, and bought one additional PX27 replacement kit with 4 x 386 and an adapter. But the 1.5 v silver oxide 386 sells for $4.5 a piece in Toronto, the PX27 at $15 is still a good deal compare with 4 x 386.

PX27 battery has bing sold at eBay for a long period of time

Go to ebay search for "V27PX", the selling has continuous supply, so don't over bid, just paid the current price.

There is a 6 volt silver oxide version of PX27 on the market: Excell S27PX, it has the same dimension as 5.6 volt mercury battery. The price for 6v S27PX is about $19.95 in Toronto, higher than $15.95 for PX27.

Whether this 6V S27PX can directly replace PX27 or four stacked up 1.5 volt silver oxide button cell (plus adapter ) I am not sure. The S27PX certainly has the same voltage as 4x386, but whether the internal resistance is the same or close is still a question. I will stick with PX27 or 4x386 for now.

I have a Minox 35 ML . The battery I use is Chromex Micro Silver Cell , 6v - 4SR44 , price aprox` £4:50. It will also take - lithium duracell PX 28 L - ucar L 544 (PX 28 L ) - varta 28 PX L. Silver oxide - duracell PX28 - ucar 544 ( PX 28 ) - varta V 28 PX . These might be the same as you would use for the other 35mm range (minox) I hope this may help novices like myself.

I just installed 4 ordinary 1.5 V cells (GP A76) in my 35EL. It worked fine after I realized that the battery compartment is metal and the cells need to be isolated from it. A piece of paper (about the same height as the compartment) that I rolled and put into the battery compartment took care of that. If you do that, be careful that the cover can make contact, though.
