In need of apprasials

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Exchange: A Forum for Antiques and The Arts : One Thread

Where do I start! I have alot of antiques that were handed down to me from my great aunt and know nothing about. But the question is, who can I get who knows what they are talking about? And who can I trust? There are auction houses where I am located, but I feel they are not trust worthy! Maybe I am being too protective of my collectibles but they are so wonderful !I may have a real treasure! If someone can help me, please do, thanks.

It sounds as if you are about to embark on an exciting adventure with your new collection!

You can call the International Society of Appraisers at 888/ISA-4732, or email them at isa_hq@compuserve.com for the name of an appraiser in your area who can help you.

It might be better, however, to research the items first yourself, using the many resources available in your local library (also via interlibrary loan), nearby museums, national collecting associations, as well as publications, like our own Antiques and The Arts Weekly.

While I understand your hesitancy about auction houses, most are reputable and often host free appraisal days.

We wish you luck in your odyssey!
