Governor
SUBJECT: Year 2000 Readiness Survey

I am very concerned about the progress of local government in addressing the Year 2000 Problem.

The Year 2000 Problem is a statewide business continuation problem that, if ignored, could impact services and programs vital to the citizens of Minnesota. Beyond computers, the Year 2000 Problem may also affect equipment that supports business operations and safety such as building fire/life safety systems, emergency response systems, security systems in jails, medical equipment, water and sewer systems, and traffic lights. Utility providers and private sector business partners that have not addressed the Year 2000 Problem may also affect local governments ability to serve citizens. It is vital that the citizens of Minnesota maintain a high level of confidence that government and businesses will continue to provide uninterrupted services that they depend on and expect.

The Honorable Arne H. Carlson
Governor, Minnesota
