Texas Air National Guard

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hubby got home very late last night from drill weekend. Seems he had been discussing the possibility of getting out of TANG with another friend who is active duty ANG. She informed him that in 12-98 the rules had changed and you can no longer get out before your enlistment is up. It used to be that your wing commander could sign off on the paper work and you would be released, no big deal. Well, that is no more, you just can't. Awfully sneaky of them to not let people know. (Fear of mass exodus? I know my hubby would want to be at home where he can see to the safety of his family if TEOTWAWKI).

Don't get me wrong, the ANG can use men like my husband, especially in times of crisis. However, I don't look forward to him being away from home during Y2K time. His enlistment is up 12-2000 (yikes). This brings up a new scenario for me. I just kinda assumed he would be here...

All comments appreciated.

Interesting post. Today's WorldNetDaily says some Guardsmen are resigning instead of taking anthrax vaccine. I came away from that article with the idea that a Guardsman could resign at any time, so your post is interesting.

The story on anthrax vaccine I heard yesterdaay, is that some GI (NG or Army I dunno) was forced to take a "discharge other than honorable" because he refused to take the anthrax vaccine.

Take care. My prayers are with you.

Sharon,

Active-duty enlistees; Cannot resign

Reserve members; Can resign

Active Guard and the Reserve are a major component of any military contingency. Due to the "anthrax" vexation (Defense Secretary William S. Cohen has ordered all 2.4 million active-duty and reserve forces to take the six-shot vaccine by 2003)and potential, if not certain, Y2k related disruptions, the "Brass" is estimating a probable reduction of force in the range of 20-25%. Any reasonable person will understand immediatly that these figures are absolutely unacceptable to 'Command'. The ability to institute a draft and consummate effective training in an expedient manner was lost with the advent of "technological warfare". Sadly, the only two choices for rectifying this erosion of personnel, should it occur:

1. Official Declaration of War

2. Official Declaration of Martial Law

Take your pick!

Please don't accuse me of being cold and unfeeling because that wouldn't be true. But I have to say that if you willingly sign a contract to be a member of the National Guard or any other organization, where you're getting paid (no matter how little) and rewarded with some benefits to be part of the country's emergency response when a crisis occurs, it's not logical to complain when you have to be away from home at Christmas or Y2K. A deal is a deal. Yes, I DO know what it's like, Sweetie was in the military and took part in combat operations. Sharon, I sincerely hope your husband is home with you for Y2K but if not--sorry, c'est la guerre.

Eeek cccc. Yet another incentive to declaring Martial Law. The noose is wrapping tighter. Thanks for the insight.

Anybody know what it's like to live under Martial Law? Does it restrict ordinary cityzzzzzns from tootlin round in their cars grocery shopping? Does it automatically come with food & gas rationing + travel restrictions?

We are really savoring these outwardly "carefree"-appearing days. Wish it weren't raining incessantly! About this time of year migrating South looks real tempting.
