BLAIR'S BLEAK WARNING ON Y2K COMPLIANCE

last updated 05/03/99 05:22

Tony Blair has taken a leading role in last-ditch efforts to get businesses working on the so-called millennium bug.

The latest "State of the Nation" report spells out that the country is certainly in a considerable state over Year 200 compliance.

And it has a stark warning from the Prime Minister: "Time has very nearly run out."

In the report, the fourth produced by Government-backed Action 2000, Mr Blair said: "The bug is biting now. One in 10 companies interviewed by Action 2000 has already suffered disruption caused by the bug.

"I strongly urge board directors, managers and employees alike to ensure their firms, their jobs and their livelihoods are safe from the bug."

The report stated that only 43% of the UK's 1.2 million private firms are on course to complete preparations by the new year.

Although understanding and awareness of the bug was as its highest, action to do anything about it was still unacceptably low.

One of the most important issues raised in this report is health and safety.

Managing director of Action 2000 Gwynneth Flower said: "It is worth reminding companies that there is an explicit legal duty on employers to identify what they need to do to ensure health and safety in the workplace by carrying out an assessment of the risks. The bug is such a risk."

Action 2000 had previously stated that it would 'name and shame' those companies lagging behind but said it was "too early" to begin that process. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Kevin,

Remember last year when Blair was going to unleash his army of 30,000 "bug busters" - ? Missed it by about 29,900 (in fact, I think that was mentioned in the Senate report).

Oh, and don't forget- the UK is a world leader in Y2K preparation! Yessiree!

It sure would be nice if Emperor Clinton got his favorite intern's face out his lap long enough to warn the US population about Y2K the way Blair is warning the UK!

PM Blair states: "I strongly urge board directors, managers and employees alike to ensure their firms, their jobs and their livelihoods are safe from the bug."

Bzzzzttt....Wrong!!

CYA translation: "If folks in the private sector don't hurry up and spend their money to fix this thing, I'll be forced to do something productive for a living!"
