Be Informed

Y2K & Your Food is a complex and dynamic subject, not easily covered in one short, sweet, little paragraph. However, these issues of Fast Food Facts will help speed up your learning curve, concentrating pertinent, vital information you need to understand the Y2K food situation quickly and easily, in plain language, without a whole lot of technical mumbo-jumbo. So, it will be easier for you or others you know to be able to show, tell and share this information with others who may be unaware or not yet get the Big Picture.

For example, "What Does A Computer Glitch Have To Do With Food?" is a question often asked, since many people still associate Y2K with just computers.

By now youve probably heard a technical explanationof just what all the Y2K fuss is about. If you havent, you can read about it in "Y2K - Year 2000 - Millennium Bug - What is it?" by Al Anderson, Computer Consultant for y2kEasyFix: e-mail: mailto:y2kfix@y2kEasyFix.com provided by the InfoBot Index:

Even so, like most people, you probably do not automatically realize the potential implications, Y2K's spillover into daily life, its impact on supply lines and goods and services. In other words, how it will impact you and mean and our lifestyles, our day to day lives. But regardless of whether or not you understand the computerese, (and actually it's really not necessary that you do), the technological implications of Y2K are only the first level. This is a thumbnail capsule of Y2K FFF #2's answer to:

Be Centered

Y2K is, and will continue to be, an emotionally charged issue. That's true whether you are justlearning about it, or already actively involved andpreparing for the worst. Furthermore, just the stress of the uncertainty about it alone can wreak havoc on your nervous system. All of us need some coping tools.

No matter what, EVERYONE has to squarely face and process this Y2K issue and its potential impact on our lives. This can be, in itself, an upsetting, even depressing process. When I finally came to the realization, after extensive study, that the Y2K Crunch was NOT just some kind of candy bar, it took me several weeks of feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, angry and then deeply sad, before I could mobilize myself to act. Not everyone will process this in the same way. And few people are talking about the more sociological aspects of Y2K. This newsletter will not only address these, but offer suggestions, guidelines and hints for surviving, dealing and coping mentally and emotionally, even on deeper levels, with the other, more human consequences of Y2K.

Be Prepared

Many people are already looking for direction about what and how to be prepared for Y2K food continencies. Sales are brisk in so-called survival foods and other supplies. This will continue, especially, as increasing numbers of high profile organizations and agencies, such as the Red Cross, the USDA, the U.S. Senate and others, make their public statements and appraisals.

What should I do first?

So, to prepare for Y2K, the first thing to do is go out and order large quantities of freeze-dried camping supplies or those expensive "Feed-a-family-of-four-for-six-months-for-$4000" survival packages they're selling, RIGHT? No. Cases of canned foods, then?

NO. Containers first?

NO.

No, actually the first thing to do in order to start preparing for Y2K doesn't have anything to do with food and eating per se.

Its actually more about taking "stock" than "stocking up"; doing some real honest examination, assessment and reflection on a few basics. About your attitudes and assumptions about food. About what you really need and comparing it with what you want and desire.

It's about deciding that this Y2K thing is an excellent opportunity to finally begin to implement, adopt and incorporate the kind of healthier eating patterns YOU KNOW you should be observing anyway...

And it's about food circles---getting together with others around you who are also concerned about the effects of Y2K---beyond the computer---and working together for mutual survival, support and confidence.

Look for plenty of facts on calculating calorie needs, storage tips, how to cook basic foods, energy and money saving strategies for realistic Y2K food scenarios, what to do "if", etc.,in upcoming issues..

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

One in the Work,
Nancy Lee
