Mitchell,

Thanks for the post and reference.

Sounds like serious risks of death.

-- Watchful (seethesea@msn.com), March 20, 1999.

If I read this article correctly, it sounds like Koskinen & Bennett say that 30 million US citizens may not have water 1/1/2000.

If this is correct, I think the mass-media has serious problems getting information out to people.

Anonymous99,

Well, no; they don't *say* that. But that may be inferred from what they do day. :-)

Anonymous99,

Oops. Correction of typo.

It appears that the "bump in the road" is going to be a very dry one.

-- Incredulous (ytt000@aol.com), March 20, 1999.

Just a bump, right Norm?

-- KoFE (Your@town.USA), March 20, 1999.

No water because of POWER? Auch, tis only a local and regional thing I tell ya! Thirty million people in the dark? Without water? Tis a mear bump, lad.

Historically a city without a sufficient water supply is a dead city. Most cities are built alongside rivers or beside seas. Ancient Rome had the famous aqueducts because the Tiber River was insufficient. Today, however, so many flowing bodies of water are contaminated that scooping up free-flowing water would result in many illnesses and deaths.

I live in northwestern Ohio, and the numerous creeks and streams are highly polluted from farmers' fertilizer runoff and home owners' sewage lines pouring untreated raw water waste into the rivulets. It's quite sad that our "advanced" civilization is so stupid in dumping waste products.

Just recall, under one of the Presidential Directive's that gave FEMA a lot of power, it also put WATER under the responsibility of the DoD.

The Urban Warrior's will likely be on water detail, among other things.

30 million without water, 25 million body bags? Hmmm, pretty close, maybe they already had the other 5 million in stock!

font off off I say!

As far as I know at this time, the 25M body bag stuff remains unsubstanciated rumor. We are not likely to get real confirmation unless an insider sacrifices themselves on the alter of Whistle-Blower.

It does beg the question though, what is the normal 'inventory' of such morbid items maintained by the government? Is this information classified or is it publically available?

Can any emergency response personnel here tell us about inventories maintained at the state or local government level? I would assume that a major metropolitan area (e.g. NYC) maintains a level consistant with their anticipated need.

In general, I believe we can get an idea of the government's perception by examining the spending for preparation (see Ed Yourdon's thread Likelihood of troop redeployments in 2nd half 1999?). Much of this information may be classified so we would not have access to it but perhaps some is public.

Also, who are the main manufacturers of body bags?

Historical question:

Is there any historical study of an industrialized city which has lost access to most of it's water supply? I'm thinking with all of the bombing in WWII, for instance, there must have been a number of cities that sustained severe damage to their water distribution systems at one time or another...anybody ever try to document what happened next?

just wondering, Arlin
