Im forwarding this message to anyone who may be interested:

In an effort to encourage responsible and safe outdoor experiences, the Discovery Program is hosting a 72 hour wilderness first responder course by Wilderness Medical Associates on July 28-August 5, 1999, at Prospect Heights Middle School in Orange, Virginia.

Wilderness Medical Associates was founded in 1978 to provide medical training and risk management for Outward Bound Schools in the United States. Conventional First Aid and EMT training curricula are designed for an urban environment, and assume the availability of 911 communications and rapid ambulance transport to a hospital. Outward Bound was operating wilderness expeditions and found that conventional medical training programs did not address the specialized wilderness context of delayed rescue transport in remote areas, prolonged exposure to severe environments, and the limited availability of medical equipment. Wilderness Medical Associates tailored courses to these needs and discovered that the demand for this training extended to organizations as diverse as the National Park Service, university outing clubs, rural ambulance services, the FBI, and oil exploration companies.

Through a network of businesses, citizens, and outdoor enthusiasts, we have created an Outward Bound experiential education program that gives our eighth grade students the opportunity to explore their academic curriculum in an outdoor setting. In return, the Discovery Program is offering this medical training at the cost price of $425. We will be requiring a deposit of $100 on or before May 15, with the balance of the tuition due the week before the course is scheduled to begin. We have to maintain an enrollment of twenty-five students, so an early commitment is suggested.

If you are interested in being a part of the first responder course, please contact me at school, or at home by phone (540-672-4356) or email (amink@ns.gemlink.com) as soon as possible, and we will mail you an application packet and more detailed information about the course.

We look forward to you joining us for the course.

Just a note to anybody who read my post(s) further down about "ditch medicine" training, be aware that the training offered above, and what I was talking about, are two very different things. FWIW, PJ in TX
