Martial law truck in New Mexico found with roadblock signs..please repeat the details

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I read about a truck that was stopped at a weigh station in New Mexico and was found to be loaded with "Road Closed due to Martial Law" signs. Can anyone restate those details or validate the story ?

I've heard the story several times. Each in a different state, sometimes with trucks, sometimes with trains. None verifiable. Urban legends tend to move around a bit.

One thing's fairly dependable: the authorities won't be using the term "martial law" when they decide to impose it. They have probably already invented a nifty new user-friendly term, don't cha think...?

Of course, uh, for, they'll come up with something like "private-public coopertiave ititiative" or some lame A$$ thing. But it will be martial law, pure and simple. Remember this saying " Believe a politian's words, and you have earned your fate."

Um, one thing I never got about this "story" was why a "road closed" sign would need a reason? I thought they just use the same ol' "road closed" signs over and over again. Never saw one with a reason before.

What about Road Closed - Bridge Out!

What about Road Closed - Bridge Out, or for you military types Road Closed - Range Hot!

When I put the comment about the signs being seen in California into a thread (about California fuel price increases and possible fuel shortages) two weeks ago it, the signs read "Road Closed By Military Order".

This is one of the hoariest of the urban legends.

(for the vocab challenged==> "Hoary" means "having Hair" usually, grey.)
