Oly 400z vs Fuji MX-700greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread |
I'm currently in the market to purchase a digicam and have narrowed it down to two models the Olympus 400z and the Fuji MX-700. Can anyone give advice as to which would be the better choice aside from price.BTW MegaDepot.com has the Olympus 400z for $515.95 and the Fuji MX-700 for $355.95 and when to add a 8 MB card and disk adapter they come out to be pretty evenly priced.

Daniel, I don't know much about the Fuji but the thing I like about the 400Z that I have read is that it can store images at 4 compression levels, one of which is raw/uncompressed (TIFF) images. I had a trial run of one at a camera store. It is also nice and compact. The menu and bottons are user friendly and the LCD image replay is very sharp. I would skip the 8mb card and get a 16mb or two. See if the dealer will change it for a 16mb or throw in 16mb for not more than $50. Also, get an extra set of Camedia (Olympus Brand) NiMh batteries as you'll need them. I have an Olympus D620L and the batteries last a good while as long as I don't need a flash, which I do in very bright and dark situations.I don't know what kind of printer you are planning to use but if you want good photo quality pictures, the ALPS MD1300 is an excellent printer. It's a Dye Sublimation printer which is the processed used by film processors. I have shown my printers to many people and the response is always the same "WOW".

One big difference between the two cameras you mentioned is the true optical zoom lens the D-400 has, whereas the MX-700 is only a digital zoom. - This will make a big difference in your picture-taking. (But then, I'm personally very partial to zoom lenses. - If you're not, then the $160 difference might be a bigger deal.) The MX-700 does win hands-down for compactness, although the D-400 Zoom is small enough to stick in a pocket. You're right too, the included FlashPath on the Oly really does even-out the price.
