Hurricanes--free e-mail bulletins from Lowe's

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I subscribe to Lowe's 99 Hurricane Central, which some of you might like to subscribe to as well. (It was Lowe's 98 last year, of course.) When a tropical depression forms the service begins sending bulletins. (It's free.) This is their first message this season:

GRAY SAYS '99 MAY BE JUST AS DEVASTATING

National hurricane forecaster William Gray is sticking with his earlier guess about this hurricane season -- and it's still not looking good. Gray is predicting 14 tropical storms, nine hurricanes and four intense hurricanes. They are the same figures issued by the Colorado State University professor in December.

Find out what Gray has to say about Florida and how many billions of dollars in damage the next big storm could cause.

1926 HURRICANE WOULD BE COSTLIEST

Adjusting for how Florida has changed, the storms of the early 20th Century would do damage on the order of Hurricane Andrew, an unnerving prospect for the future, according to hurricane researcher Christopher W. Landsea. The No. 1 storm would be the Category 4 hurricane of 1926, estimated to cause $80 billion if it hit today. Find out what the other top storms would be.

Check out these reports and start thinking about preparing for what could be a remarkable season ahead. It officially starts June 1.

Thanks, Old Git!! Very worthwhile links! I subscribed & I'll be visiting those sites frequently.

Feels good to know I'm at least prepared with supplies if one should hit my area. I sure hope not, though. I'd hate to go into 2000 empty- handed!!
