Got Body Armor?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I am sure this has been discussed on this forum before(search engine?), but I am recent full-time lurker. I am looking for info on body armor, perferably the high tech stuff. Are their any full body suits? I have seen the latest .mil Urban Warfare Gear but I am looking for some commercial versions. Otherwise I am going to have to build my own batcave (garage) and get to work. Diagrams or Ideas greatly appreciated. jp

Don't know where you're coming from, but if you truly need it your "organization" will provide it to you. Doubt if many people in this group are into the subject, but if you wish to make it, do as aspiring hoods do: Cut up pieces of belted "puncture resistant" tires. After all, that's what the material was originally designed for. Cover it with a clown suit.

Where did you learn that interesting snippet of information ?I'm intrigued!

Dear Chuck, Many thanks.Your first link took me to the fencing. It might just keep my 126lb Anatolian dog IN !!

Second link took me right there.I did wonder whether it was Explorer 5 which I've downloaded this weekend. My 21 year is into live action role play at university.I gather upto 20 of them spend weekends dressed up as weird & wonderful knights & monsters & roam the fields & woodlands having pitched battles with rubber swords & maces etc.He says that it is possible to be hurt so with much effort has been making himself a suit of chain link armour. However this is proving very heavy & noisy to wear.Hence my interest in the rubber body armour ! Kinky,I'm not !!

jp,

About 18 questions down from yours on the "New Questions" list is this thread, started earlier today:

Geeks are buying body armor. at http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000md9
Most browsers have a Find function that will work on either the "Nw Questions" list or the "Recent Answers" list. Mine easily finds both threads by searching on either "body" or "armor". (In this particular case, one might also look for "armour" because we have many British and Canadian contributors.)

No Spam, thanks but you should probably read something before you recommend it. I read the thread, nothing helpful there. Why do you think I posted a question. jp

"Cut up pieces of belted "puncture resistant" tires. After all, that's what the material was originally designed for. Cover it with a clown suit."

ROFL. I haven't have a laugh as fulfilling as that for quite a while! Thank you.

When I worked not far from the Hill, I often picked up a sandwich at a place nicknamed the "bullet-proof." It was so nicknamed after the two inch thick wall of acryllic that separated kitchen and smiling cashier from the rest of the store. I always wondered if it'd stop a volley of gunfire.

Anyway, I did receive a list of armor-related web sites from someone here concerned about my location. The list of links is as follows:

SAFARI: manufacturers of body armor for police and other personnel

http://www.safariland.com/as.htm

POINT BLANK: makers of body armor for police and other personnel

http://www.pointblankarmor.com/

ARMACEL: For pencil-pushers, looking for a bullet proof clip board

http://www.armacelarmorcorp.com

KROLL-O'GARA: If I was rich and paranoid, I'd shop here for my cars! Check out the armored cars. My personal favorite is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class 600 which defeats threats such as military assault rifles and grenade blasts. This is the car for all Bond fans, optionals include oil sprayer, gun ports, and supplemental oxygen among other options.

P.S. It is my assumption that First Defense buys from OGARA. So if you want to save yourself the mark-up...

I did read the other thread beforehand, as I do all threads to which I post links. It's possible to turn a poor short thread around with a decent posting, if one so desires -- I didn't assume that you chose not to, because you made no mention of knowing about the other thread.

I didn't condemn you for starting a separate thread or for not posting to the earlier one.

I didn't recommend the other thread; I just posted the link. Of course, I could have refrained, but chose to go ahead because of the following factors.

Since your first sentence indicated that you might not have seen the other thread, and you did not state that you had seen it, I posted a link to it for convenience of reference.

Since you mentioned that you were a recent lurker and wrote "(search engine?)", it was conceivable that you might not have thought of the search-the-titles technique. Other beginners have stated that they overlooked that for a while.

:-)

jp - couple of thoughts:

1. I have never met anyone who actually used one of those bulletproof clipboards as anything other than a clipboard (well status symbol too, but anyway...). I still don't understand how the kinetic energy KE of the round striking the clipboard is supposed to dissipate without breaking the clipboard owner's arm(s).

2. BUY A COOLING SHIRT TO WEAR UNDERNEATH THE ARMOR! this can be the difference between continuing to function and keeling over with heat stroke. very important and often overlooked.

just my 2 cents' worth,

Arlin

I've seen body armor listed in U.S. Cavalry's catalog.

For a long list of mil surplus outlets see http://www.nowonline.com/warzone/

-- Tom Carey (tomcarey@mindspring.com), May 03, 1999.

Helpful hint about Mil surplus: The vests you see there are usually "fragmentation vests" - often Vietnam vintage. Handy against shrapnel, (& maybe birdshot at a distance), but unreliable against most handgun/long gun ammo. False security is worse than none.

-- Bumpkin (~@~.~), May 03, 1999.

Appreciate the info. Still haven't found any references to real 'full body armor'. I would imagine that there has to be a couple of R & D projects going on somewhere?? Maybe I need that bat cave after all.
