dilution and graininess w/ D-76

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

i have noticed that my negs developed in D-76 (1+1) tend to produce grainier prints than the ones developed in stock. is this expected ? does that mean that all that is gained in sharpness and consistency among advantages with dilution is lost to increase in grain?

Response to dilution and graininess

Yes, usually diluting ID-11 increases both sharpness and grain also giving a slight compensating effect. I used to use it 1:1 for years and was generally happy with the results, but if you're after the finest grain possible, use it as a stock or move to Percetol. E.
