To Flint.....Fear

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

This is of course to everyone but is addressed to Flint because of an earlier thread.

Basicly it is the view that they will take care of themselves and blow anyone that gets in the way or doesn't think like them. This is not a blanket discription but if things get bad, cooperation and good information and conduct will be important. I see something bigger.

It could also be fear? I think that there might be more to this than one would think. I have noticed that most don't bother reading the long reports and or testimony that is out there. Most aurguments have a refferance point and documentation that is associated with the issues. I noticed the post with Koskinen addressing APEC and basicly saying that there are countries going down. Also alot of info about the States that I had not heard much about before. Yet hardly anyone must have read the whole thing or it would have landed on the "pollies" heads. John Koskinen gets it, I know he does. It seems in the past,  in the statements from him there was a bit of word playing, semantics. He ment no TEOTWAWKI in the States. He did not mean no preparing is nessecary. The way I see it is that they are going to be spotting the troubled areas and getting the help to go where it is needed. There is no sense in everyone in an area buying a generator when the power will not fail where they are at. This will possibly mean that generators will in short supply where they do need them. That kind of thing. This is the plan with medication. No stockpiling drugs. Now how that is going to sit with folks is another question.

You may know that I am not a Polly type but I am wondering how many people would look at it that way and not panic for the sake of the common good. The Health Industry is going to be a disaster in public relations. How can you tell an insulin user that there is a risk in the suppy of the drug but we can't provide you with a supply over one or two months. Multiply that by millions, then multiply that will all the other drugs that many need to maintain their health. Could be a bit of stress.

Allot of people cut Y2K with their knives, oh lets cut power, the banks, teleco's up and they may be in good shape - polly - bad shape - doomer. But there is this iceburg of issues that are there and I don't think the impact of what is going to happen has hit the polly - doomer veiw.

It has nothing to do with polly - doomer it is peoples sanity that maybe on the line. What is the stress going to do to society. For example, people are going to "bunker down" and prep to survive where they live. They may feel trapped. The last thing you do to a animal or human is trap them with no escape. That will cause people to panic. We are in for interesting times. At one time the Chinise thought that was a curse when suggested to someone. We are going to see it in our whole society.

So maybe what they are feeling is Fear.

Now read these documents with this in mind

koskinen gets a little closer to being a doomsayer

Koskinen meets w/Pharm. industry - meeting minutes 3/8/99

Do you really think we can handle the truth.

Thanks

Brian

Another fear that is rarely mentioned,,,, loosing your home because of economic problems. That is something that bothers me. And I see my position as low risk. This would be a personal TEOTWAWKI. Of course this can happen at anytime and a prudent person would make arrangments to the effect of having a roof over their heads.

A bit OT but Clinton said that new buildings should be built with one "strong room" to go to in case of disasters. This is after his tour of the disaster zone. This was an interesting comment.

Drian,

Have you considered *selling* your home, use any profit you may have made wisely, go into rented accommodation, pay rent up front, weather the storm. If the fall out is as bad as many are predicting you may be able to pick up a new property on cents on the dollar if/when the dust settles. You will be mobile for a new job/opportunity. You will have assets (providing you have not given any profits to a Bank :) ) If y2k is a big fat zero away you go, plan B and all that... make any sense?

Sorry, Brian!

Andy

Thank you so much :o) I was not conserned with myself. My home is rented and I own a 20' trailer if needed. Plus with a few propane tanks, propane stove, woodstove (can use for baking !) septic field, reserviour, to many books and cassettes, in my hometown, lakes, ocean, rivers near by, fisherman for five years, stone carver (y2k compliant I don't sell my stuff), money for over a year, daughter that will be 20 (thank goodness), no health problems, and plenty of good news on the local y2k front (we are in a earthquake zone, I WORRY about that) local government gets it (a bit :o) And if that isn't enough it is just 1/2 mile to virtual infinite wilderness (for me anyway).

Andy or anyone else is your location Y2K proof? And why? This would be important for folks to look at their locations and see the good and bad points. I did not mention my worst case problem. Living on an Island, Seniors (including my parents) are a larger precentage, economic problems already, FOOD, political leadership and a compliacency that comes with living in an area that has a tendency to be more self reliant. They say we have gotten by before we'll do it agian. Are we missing a bigger picture.

Andy you want to know my biggest fear? That the elements being unpredictable as they can be, create a disaster on top of Y2K. Nature has been reletively kind during the last two winters. (not including the Ice Storm) It has been unseasonably warm. Now that MAY be the result of El NINO but with EL NINA the temps should drop. The Oil Corps know this and that is one reason the price will go up. Heating fuel can influence the price and the bets are on for colder temps. This is usually swimming season for me now and there was hail today.

Some folk might think I "fear monger" on such a topic but after working most of your life outside you get a feel for it. And some of you folk may be into systems in comps but I have been into weather systems.

Lets see if what I am trying to say is clear. Here is an example, up north (NWT) in the middle of January if there is a "chinook", a blast of warm moist air comes through and it is a large weak mass. For a day you will have nice weather. After that the Arctic winds come back and it is hell to just walk around let alone have a civilized life. I point this out as it was a rare occurance up there. Ocean air does not reach up there much

Now we get back and use the same analogy with El Nino and EL Nina. As I have said the extreme of one (the warm Pacific air) pushing the regular arctic weather created an unstable situation, the warm air was not going to stick around and the arctic air "snapped" right back. Hell to pay.

During El Nino we had unusually warm weather. Fires in Florida, heat wave in Texas, Ice Storm in Quebec and NE States and golf in Edmonton this winter. Wierd.

What I am afraid of is a BAD winter, the cold "snaps", this would not be good. I call it a Milne 6. He doesn't measure the scale that high.

That is why you will always hear me tell people to make sure you are warm.

That is my message.

We northerners have a real problem when it comes to y2k, winter. I don't worry so much about the power being out, I worry about low voltage burning up the motors on the boiler pumps and furnace fans. It only takes a few minutes of low voltage to burn up an electric motor.

Brian- I understand. i also understand the weather stuff. there hasn't been a "normal" year for awhile here.... There is also a serious element of "unease" about. Many people are on edge and they don't know why. a sense of waiting for the other shoe to drop. I think this will only continue to grow. The whole war in Kosovo is only making it worse. How much worse we may not know, but we are playing with fire. I wouldn't be surprised to see more and more incidents such as in colorado- many people will feel overwhelmed by it all and hopeless- children don't kill other children and then themselves unless they feel all is lost and it will never get better. What we have done as a world and a society to bring it to this point is sorely in need of examination- but it ain't gonna happen. The folks in power will keep on doing what they always have. Which brings me to the definition of insanity- continuing to do what you always have but expecting a different result....

Flame

Yes winter and Y2K. I have checked the net pretty throughly and not found much advice that is worth anything on the net. There is a pretty good site from Quebec Hydro, but it recommends evacuation and that is touch and go with a young family. It would seem to me that they should have alternate heat and or power supply. They require sprinklers for fires and that is a ton of money but little in the way of heating alternatives. It is like this blind spot in humanity.

Anita

There is this expectation that we must conform to what is on the idiot box. If you are a square in a round hole and don't fit then you must be a problem. I feel sorry for kids, high schools are just breeding grounds for conformity by peer pressure. And then it extends to the adults and they do not even realize that what is expected from them is not really a mentally sound lifestyle.

Of course I am an artist type, and we have a tendency to be a bit more excentric. And I fit the bill.

HHHMMMMM talking about mental stability.....8>}
