Is that a bump in the middle of the road...or a dead skunk?

Noteworthy: Rockers Prepare For Y2K

By John Swenson

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Songwriter-humorist Loudon Wainwright III is getting a jump on the new year by scheduling the single ''Y2K,'' from his latest album ``Social Studies,'' for July 13 release -- just 171 days before the digital apocalypse it predicts.

Wainwright, known for his deadpan black humor and satirical skills, outdoes himself on ``Y2K,'' which parodies the road song genre.

``We've been trucking down the information superhighway,'' Wainwright sings before predicting, ``It will be a dirt road come Y2K.''

Proving once again that there's no bad news that a little laughter couldn't make more bearable, Wainwright goes on to skewer Jesse Helms, Tonya Harding, Saddam Hussein and O.J. Simpson.

``Those of you who are familiar with my work know that I will go to almost any length, no matter how long, to get a laugh, no matter how cheap,'' Wainwright explains. ``I see it as part of my job.''

Meanwhile, the Eagles have scheduled their own celebration of Y2K, headlining a concert at the as-yet-unfinished Staples center in downtown Los Angeles.

Longtime cohorts Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne will also be on a bill that is guaranteed to produce a star-studded audience at the top ticket price of $1,000 a seat. The center will also host local sports teams the Lakers, Kings and Clippers, an arena football team and next year's Democratic National Convention.

Will the Eagles have second thoughts the way Barbra Streisand did?

"Dead Skunk"

words and music by Loudon Wainwright III

original 45, Columbia 4-45726, 1972 reissue 45, Columbia 13-33269

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Crossin' the highway late last night,

He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right,

He didn't see the station wagon, car, The skunk got squashed and there you are!

(Chorus) You got yer Dead skunk in the middle of the road,

Dead skunk in the middle of the road, Dead skunk in the middle of the road,

Stinkin' to high heaven! Take a whiff on me that ain't no rose!

Roll up yer window and hold yer nose,

You don't have to look and you don't have to see,

'Cause you can feel it in your olfactory, (Repeat Chorus)

Yeah you got yer dead cat and you got yer dead dog,

On a moonlight night you got yer dead toad frog.

Got yer dead rabbit and yer dead raccoon,

The blood and the guts they're gonna make you swoon!

You got yer dead skunk, in the middle, Dead skunk in the middle of the road.

Dead skunk in the middle of the road, Stinkin' to high heaven. C'mon stink!

(Fiddle break) You got it, It's dead, it's in the middle, Dead skunk in the middle!

Dead skunk in the middle of the road, Stinkin' to high heaven!

All over the road, technicolor man! Oh, you got pollution.

It's dead, it's in the middle, And it's stinkin' to high, high heaven!

Just heard that song for the first time a few days ago on the radio. What a laugh - was taking my little son to daycare and he even started singing along to it.....oh boy....
