Summary of Missed Class -Feb. 17, 1999

On February 17, 1999, I missed class due to a professional workshop I attended on February 18 in Minneapolis, MN entitled "Strengthening Your Students' Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Skills".

According to Tim Everson's account of the evening, I missed the presenter Martha Eberhart Galinsky from the UMD library. Galinsky taught the group how to set up Netscape in order to go through the proxy server at UMD. By going through the proxy server, users are asked to log in to the system. By logging in, users are allowed access to Electronic Resources at the UMD library. Handouts were given listing databases that were available through the UMD library. The class spent time looking at ERIC and discovering how to use it. In the handout was a thesaurus of ERIC descriptors. Martha explained the importance of varying the descriptors in order to find relevant information.

Upon my return, Pat Holte spent time showing me how to get into the UMD system and how to use ERIC. We practiced searching for information related to our thesis topic. I feel that I have a thorough understanding of how the system works.
