Building larger neck

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Bodybuilding : One Thread

I am a 47 year old male and have been lifting weights for about 2 months. My goal is to build my upper body, specifically to enlarge my neck. What exercises do you recommend to make my neck larger? How long should I expect this to take?

Deadlifts. Plain and simple. They work almost every muscle in your whole body, and, whether or not you realize it at the time, they work your neck also. My neck has gotten so big from doing them that I am starting to get worried, actually...

Nautilus used to have a neck machine that worked very well. I used to use it back in college, about 10 years ago. Unfortunately, I've never seen another one. I've heard that gyms and spas don't want to take the liability with it - it's considered a big injury risk. Shrugs can also help build your neck muscles. You may be able to find a neck strap that holds weight - to work the neck directly - but they are very awkward.

Try a wrestlers' bridge. It is the best weights free exerise for building up your neck. I would stay away from 'neck-type' harneses since they are liable to cause neck strain in the long run.
