No 'bug insurance' for flight delays

Are we going to be seeing more of this from the insurance industry?

Air travellers hit by the "Millennium Bug" will not be able to claim on their travel insurance for the resulting delay. The Association of British Insurers revealed the no-claim catch in advice given in advice issued to passengers. Passengers who were thinking of cancelling trips because of concerns over the effects of the bug would also not be covered by holiday insurance.

But the ABI said that if passengers fell ill or had baggage stolen during a bug-related delay, those medical expenses and theft losses would be covered. Insurance for people travelling at, or near, the end of the year would mostly remain the same as for any other trip.

The ABI went on: "The only difference will be if you suffer a loss which occurs as a result of a date-related failure. For example, if the airline being used by your tour operator was hit by technical difficulties and had to postpone a flight, you would not be able to claim on your travel insurance for the resulting delay."

The association also warned that "thieves won't be taking a holiday over the millennium" and that people should never leave belongings unattended, especially at airports and stations and on the beach.

The ABI also pointed out that precise policy wordings varied from company to company and that people planning to be away over the millennium should see how their cover might be affected.
