Given the trend of recent threads I thought I should point out that this thread (at least starts) on topic in alignment with the About statement.

It's the start of swimming pool season and therefore sale time for swimming pool supplies. I saw Pace brand dry bleach (Sock It or some other brand name) 15# for only $8.88 at Ace Hardware, which I assume is a national franchise. 15# will treat 300,000+ gallons of water see http://home.earthlink.net/~kenseger/surv/bleach.txt for details.

I'm sure that other stores will be competing with Ace, anybody else seen good prices at other chains?

Please note that general merchandise stores that are not pool specific usually do not stock any dry pool bleach after August, so this is last call before 12/31/99 for a good price on this stuff. If anybody wants to make "CARE packages" for neighbors, friends, and DGI family, this is a great, essential, and cheap place to start.

Hi,can you use this to treat drinking water? If so, how much per gallon? The guy at ace hardware told me you could NOT use it for treating drinking water. It would be a shame to ruin all of the water that was treated, Please let me know,thanks, Daryll

One of the links provided by Ray specifically states "do not use swimming pool chlorine as it contains additional chemicals that are poisonous."

dean, my understanding (and please don't take this as gospel) is that if you use the "regular" not "super" Hypochlorite (68% to 72%) with all other ingredients inert you will be OK. Walmart sells the small "Pool Choice Shock" for about $2 bucks.

This will purify a ton of water.

Would you like to pay $10.00 and know you are giving your family safe drinking water OR would you like to save $8.00 and play Russian Roulette and possibly poison your family because you used cheap WalMart swimming pool chemicals? I can never understand why someone would be so thrifty and thoughtless with the health and safety of the people who will be drinking the water that they are responsible for. A little common sense is in need here.
