Nikon 950 & CompactFlash cards

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

First of all, I would like to say "Thank You!" to the maintainers of this website. Relatively new to the realm of digital cameras, the reviews and comparisons presented here were *invaluable* in helping me choose the right camera.

Now my question: I have (back)ordered a Nikon 950 and have a question about its compatibility with CompactFlash cards. On the NikonUSA webpage, the specs list compatible CF sizes of 8, 15, 30, 48, and 64MB. In scouring the net, I have learned that there are many other (and larger than 64MB) cards available from many manufactures. 1. Can the 950 handle these larger sizes? 2. Can the 950 handle CF cards from non-Nikon manufactures? 3. Is there a (noticeable or significant) speed difference between sizes/manufactures? 4. Is there a (noticeable or significant) power usage between different sizes/manufactures (i.e., more memory drains batteries faster)? 5. Any suggestions on where to order from? :)

Thank you for any light you can help shed on this for me! -Scott Clements

try these two sites:

for CF Cards: www.alix.com

for NimH Batteries: www.thomas-distributing.com

Both have excellent pricing as well as matching CF Cards to your Camera. I have seen a 128mb Card. I think it was at Alix.

I have a Simple Technology 32 MB card and it works just fine. It is nice to see 64 come up on the available pictures. I kept it below 40MB so I could offload them to my Clik! disk when I travel without my laptop.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO THINK OF TWO CARDS SAY 64MB AS APPOSED TO ONE LARGE CARD SHOULD IT GET DAMAGED OR LOST YOU STILL WILL NOT HAVE SO MUCH MONEY TIED UP IN ONE CARD . JUST A THOUGHT.

I just purchased 160 MB compact flash from Lexar (with their 8x speed), which comes with a USB connection kit. I bought Lexar since 16 MB units worked well. Have not tried anything this week other than a few photos, but the CP950 seems to be working just fine. I tried it with the V1.2 firmware, as well as with the V1.3 firmware upgrade.

Cannot comment on speed or power.
