EMD E6

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

The Southern ordered several A-B sets of EMD E6's to pull the Crescent and Tennessean in the early 1940's. In addition, they ordered several single A units to pull the Southerner. I would like to know if the A-B sets for the Crescent and Tennessean were ever broken up (the A and B units separated) prior to the 1949 repainting. More specifically, could B units from Tennessean or Crescent sets ever be seen running with the Southerner A units prior to 1949? Any information would be most helpful.

Next time ask a hard question !

Actually from working a couple of years as a power distributor on a major railroad, I have learned never to say never. I would think that one of the 2800 class Southerner E-6's paired with an E-6 B unit in the original scheme would be rare, if not unlikely. I have not seen any documentary evidence, but from photographs it looks like The Tennessean and The Southerner 2900 class E-6 A and B units went into pool service around summer of 1947 and lost the train name from their flanks sometime not much after that. Though The Southerner was occasionally photographed being pulled with a single E-7 circa mid to late forties, typical power was their 2800 class E-6's, complete with train name. I have seen a photo as late as 4/49 like this.

If your dilemma is being caused by a LL P2K 2800 class A-unit being packaged with a 2900 class B-unit, for circa last half 1947 to first half 1949, I would match the E-6 B with an E-7 and run the 2800 on your The Southerner streamliner.
