Chicken Coop

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

You featured a moveable chicken coop in the 9/98 issue. I liked the idea of this. I would love to build it, but need more detailed building plans in order to do so. Are any for it or similar available?

Thanks!

Rusty I have built a couple of greenhouse style pens that I use in my pastured poultry operation that I am well pleased with. I found the plan on the web at this address: http://www.bright.net/~fwo/sub10.html You may also try Andy Lee's book, Chicken Tractor or Joel Salatin's book, Pastured Poultry Profits. All these resourses feature moveable pens for all types of poultry.

I just wanted to second the two book suggestions mentioned before. My husband and I recently started raising poultry and found both Andy Lee's and Joe Salatin's books great! Good luck!-Don

I've just recently built a coop for my six bantam chickens. It's large enough for big breeds as well. I'll post a link to some pictures when I can. I will be glad to answer any questions now though.

You might want to search on Feathersite; it's a WONDERFUL page about all kinds of poultry, including links to breed-specific webpages and anything poultry related---such as housing. Its URL is rather long and I don't have it to hand at the moment, but you might want to check for a link off of the URL http://www.angelfire.com/de/pocketflocks/

Better late than never:

"Raising Small Livestock" (by j.d. Belanger) has a fine design for a chicken coop, I built one 15 years ago, when I sold my homestead, I jacked it up, put skids under it and dragged it with my tractor 2 miles to my new place, in fact I had moved it that way several times.

I offer but a simple bit of advice. We had a variant of the moveable "chicken tractor" type of shelter. Worked beautifully. Raised some turkeys, next year some chickens. But we attached chicken wire to the "pen" area with 5/16ths staples, and one night a marauding band of raccoons took out all 31, 6 week old chicks. Be damned sure you have some sort of predator-proof place for the chicks.
