WHEN should we have the reunion?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : POPnet Reunion : One Thread

Okay, espescially 'cause of reservations needing to be in early for rental areas and stuff, we should start talking about when we want to have the reunion.

Labor day weekend has been suggested. That would be nice for people who have a longer journey and don't want to take time off of work. But I think it's also a more expensive time to travel for people who have to fly (?), and it's also relatively soon -- I don't think we should have it any sooner than that. There are probably a lot of POPnetters that haven't even found out about this yet. While that means we're probably not quite ready to carve a date in stone, I like the idea of having an in-progress discussion of potential dates.

There aren't really any significant holiday weekends between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, and most people will be busy during Thanksgiving. Who's in favor of a Saturday morning->evening event on between labor day and thanksgiving, maybe with Friday night or Sunday afternoon get-togethers for early/latecomers also? Who thinks it should be before labor day (too soon, I think) or after Thanksgiving (the holiday season is really busy for a lot of people, but it would be fine with me)?

Other considerations? Comments? Favorite kinds of beer?

I can't make it this year unless I leave the family at home (don't think that would go over very well) but I was hoping you can plan to have another reunion next year too. We were already planning to spend our vacation next year in Northern California, this summer is too short of notice. (I guess it takes people from Ohio longer to get their stuff together since we're surrounded by all this corn) :) Just an idea...

Let's wait and see if someone shows up at this one before planning next year's!! But seriously..

Okay, the idea is to have it outside, at a park, probably Lafayette reservoir. Meaning it would be best if it wasn't raining. Now, I'm gonna suggest three dates, and y'all are going to say that you like one better or that you don't care. Or you will exercise your democratic right to abstain. Everyone ready? Okay here we go..

9/5/99: the Sunday before Labor day which was already suggested -- I guess this is the default if nobody has other preferences. The problem is that's only 60 days from now, but think how many socials were set up for less than 60 minutes after posting, and people still came. So unless POPnetters are now 1,440 times slower...

9/25/99: a random full moon Saturday in September

10/10/99: the Sunday before Columbus day

I'm voting for October 10th, myself. I can't make the Sept. 25th date, and it seems like we need more time to plan.

But, I guess it has the disadvantage of not being as nice weather-wise.. though not necessarily. We do often get a lot of nice days in October. I think the rainy season tends to start at the end of October.

I'm beginning to wonder if this should happen in the spring.. !

The weather may or may not be great on October 10, but chances are it won't be raining (IIRC the rainy season kicks in around the end of October). We could wait 'till next Spring, but if the weather's the whole problem, we'd be waiting until June to guarantee no rain.

How about this: if we pick a date, and it looks like it's probably going to rain come a few days before the social, we just do a last minute location change and reserve a pizza parlor or take over the mall or something instead :) I say we needn't worry much about it.

As for planning, POPnetizens who have moved far away need time to plan travel arrangements, but I think about 2 months (ie Labor Day) is long enough for most people. Getting things set up for the actual event (reservations, food, etc) is fairly quick and easy given a couple of weeks.

First of all, isn't it funny how this started off being a POPnet reunion and now it's a "Social"???!! HEHE. Rt! 7:30! Done!

This actually should be for the topics of WHEN and WHERE both. If the event is set for an outside location, I would say it needs to be before October, because even if it doesn't rain, cold windy picnics just aren't as fun. I mean, the volleyball goes everywhere and everybody has a bad hair day. A huge concern. Yes.

I have a personal interest in postponing until Spring, myself, since I will not be able to make it this fall unless it's around Thanksgiving. Too far, too pricey, and I only have so many vacation days.

I think if it did happen this fall, it should be some time in September, it should be in an outdoor location (cheaper, can spend more on good beer) and should have some limited planned events like a volleyball court, Pin the tail on the Popnetter, etc. Having just been looking around at reception-type halls in the Contra Costa/East Bay, I can honestly say we'd end up paying like $50/person to cover the cost of the location plus buffet style food. It sounds like people would rather do something more casual and perhaps cheaper.

It sounds like the best feedback we can get right now is 1) how much are youwilling to pay to be a part of this (understanding that you will need to contribute SOMETHING)$5 $10 $20 $50 2) Which is best for you: Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Any weekend in September OK, Postpone until Spring.

If everybody comes back with $5.00 and Any Weekend in September, go for the Lafayette Reservoir. You know?

Feedback? K

This year my trip to California has been sent for the next to the last week in December. If you have it then, I can attend this year. Next year, I can plan my trip around the Reunion.

Okay, a couple of dates have come and gone. I haven't had much time to contribute much to this board. Time goes way too fast when you've got "more important" things to do than sit in Away and read a book while you wait for enough people to log in for an instasocial. I guess everyone needs time to prepare..

So let's try again. Spring time? Around the equinox? Maybe it'll be raining but probably not cold. Or later, perhaps around Memorial Day when we're not so likely to have rain? I really don't see a problem getting a place. Lafayette reservoir, an entire RT, HF, etc. are all viable options, and I currently live in a house which would likely be suitable as well.

Hey! If we have the reunion between March 7th and March 20th, you'll avoid putting up with me, as I will be in the UK. That way you won't have to see the 20 pounds I've put on and my thinning hair on top. BUT....if we have the reunion at any other time, I might have to show up. Personally, I think we should let Ivan pick a weekend, and if there are no serious objections within, say, 5-6 weeks, we roll with it! Wheeeeeeeeeee! yay! -kikokeith

Wow, you're so agreeable!! :) :)

Okay, I'll throw a party.. see new top-level posting!

The reunion date has been set! September 16th, at the Lafayette Reservor.

Go to details to see more, or go straight to the Evite.

We have a lot of people missing still, so please check the list and send email to reunion@mcquaker.org if you know how to find any of those people.

Hope to see all of you there!
