Sometimes when a batter strikes out everybody screams RUN! But sometimes the batter just has to go and sit down because she's out. How come sometimes she gets to run to first base?

If the catcher dropped the ball on the third strike, then the batter can try to run to first base. You'll note that when everybody screams RUN! the catcher throws the ball to first base.

She can run to first base if its unoccupied or if there are two outs.
