is my 300TL working right?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon FD : One Thread

I have just recently purchased a 300TL for my T90. While I'm excited about the capabilities of this unit I'm not sure it is working correctly. To test the unit I set up my flash meter (Sekonic L508)for non corded flash metering. Now if I read a f5.6 in the viewfinder and click the shutter I should get a flash reading of about f5.6 right? Well I've been getting readings of about f16&22 at ISO 400 film. Now one person told me that the flash output will be higher without film in the camera because the otf reading is off the black pressure plate. So I shot a roll of film through the camera. While most of the exposures were ok any thing within 5 feet or so was overexposed. I'm also wondering how the unit is supposed to function in apperture priority. My unit will adjust the shutter speed to correct exposure for the f stop setting of the ambient light. Is that what it is supposed to do? I thought I would have some control over f stop setting with a fixed shutter speed, I see a auto flash range label on the back of the unit, does that mean I can shot with the camera manually adjusted to the desired f stop and the flash will quench automatically at the correct exposure. If so why is the flash output the sme regardless of the appature seeting I use. HELP!!!! This probably wont be an easy problem to solve via chat so If anyone is familliar with the T90 300TL combo perhaps you would be willing to chat (phone or computer) with me about this combo.

Thanks Ken

Ken,

The 300TL has a LOT of modes and works in sometimes mysterious ways. :)

The most of the modes the camera exposes for the ambient light, and the flash/camera combo uses off the film metering to limit the flash output as fill flash.

You really need to get manual and some books. The manual can be found on eBay or through some photo stores. If you can find one, the Hove T90 book is also nice to have.

Sorry I can't give you much more, but it would take LOTS of writing.

Ken,

I forgot. Try this web site, they have the 300 TL manual online as well as a lot of good info about the 300TL and T90.

For the benefit of those trying to get to the page in the last post, there is an extra space in the address. It should be: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/canont90/index .htm

Damn! It put an extra space in my post too! Take out the space after index and it will work.
